Rs. 5000-cr. worth crops lost due to nematodes in Karnataka - The Hindu | Plant-parasitic nematodes | Scoop.it

At a time when malnutrition is still high and food prices are fast increasing, the country is losing nearly Rs. 5,000-crore worth of nutritious vegetable and fruit crops every year due to nematode infestation and related diseases associated with soil-borne pathogens

nematodes's insight:

This article is just an example on how plant-parasitic nematodes can affect food security. Nematodes can cause a lot of damage to crop production in countries which are most in need to increase crop production to feed its people.

Major Emerging Problems with Minor Meloidogyne Species

Major Emerging Problems with Minor Meloidogyne Species | Plant-parasitic nematodes | Scoop.it

Root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.) represent one of the most polyphagous genera of plant-parasitic nematodes. This review highlights recent work aimed at ‘minor’ root-knot nematodes: M. chitwoodi, M. fallax, M. minor, M. enterolobii (=M. mayaguensis), M. exigua, and M. paranaensis. Some of these species have been described only recently.

After a brief profile of each species, identification methods and their application in Meloidogyne spp. are summarized. Intraspecific variation and its impact on plant resistance breeding are discussed and interactions between M. enterolobii and Fusarium solani are highlighted as an example of synergistic interactions with other plant pathogens.

Taken together, the aim of this review is to draw attention to previously neglected and newly described Meloidogyne spp. that are developing into major problems for agriculture in tropical and temperate climates.

Dutch quick scan on Meloidogyne mali, a root-knot nematode of fruit and elm trees

Dutch quick scan on Meloidogyne mali, a root-knot nematode of fruit and elm trees | Plant-parasitic nematodes | Scoop.it

The Dutch NPPO recently published  a quick scan on the root-knot nematode Meloidogyne mali (recently synonymised with M. ulmi).

In 2012/2013 Meloidogyne mali was found on several tree species in the Botanical garden “Belmonte” (Wageningen, the Netherlands) and recently (February 2014) it was detected on the roots of an uprooted elm tree in The Hague. During recent (March, 2014) additional sampling on elms in The Hague, all sampled trees were found to be infested with M. mali at
four different localities.

M. mali is a polyphagous Asian nematode species parasitizing on several trees, shrubs and herbaceous species. It is a damaging nematode species able to induce large root galls resulting in a malformed root system with retarded growth and possibly influencing the stability of the trees. It is especially considered a risk for tree species because of the high costs for replacement and because infested trees may be more vulnerable for heavy winds. M. mali has probably been introduced into the Netherlands from Japan with elm root stock. It is known to be locally present in Baarn, Wageningen and The Hague mainly on elm trees.

-Municipalities and the tree nursery industry will be informed about the risk of this species. Surveys will be performed as part of plant health checks (plant passport and import), and in the surveillance programme 2014 for the production of apple (Malus) and elm (Ulmus) trees

Molecular Plant Pathology: Top 10 plant-parasitic nematodes in molecular plant pathology (2013)

Molecular Plant Pathology: Top 10 plant-parasitic nematodes in molecular plant pathology (2013) | Plant-parasitic nematodes | Scoop.it

The aim of this review was to undertake a survey of researchers working with plant-parasitic nematodes in order to determine a ‘top 10’ list of these pathogens based on scientific and economic importance. Any such list will not be definitive as economic importance will vary depending on the region of the world in which a researcher is based. However, care was taken to include researchers from as many parts of the world as possible when carrying out the survey. The top 10 list emerging from the survey is composed of: (1) root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.); (2) cyst nematodes (Heterodera and Globodera spp.); (3) root lesion nematodes (Pratylenchus spp.); (4) the burrowing nematode Radopholus similis; (5) Ditylenchus dipsaci; (6) the pine wilt nematode Bursaphelenchus xylophilus; (7) the reniform nematodeRotylenchulus reniformis; (8) Xiphinema index (the only virus vector nematode to make the list); (9) Nacobbus aberrans; and (10)Aphelenchoides besseyi. The biology of each nematode (or nematode group) is reviewed briefly.
