Juliana Elisa Raffaghelli's insight:

One of the main problems while attempting to promote forms of openness in Higher Education is faculty development. UNESCO's resources scaffold professional learning, as a mean to achieve the ambitious goal of opening up higher education (and support a more inclusive society).

How do students use video in higher education?

How do students use video in higher education? | Planetary Education | Scoop.it
A new SAGE white paper out today reveals the types of educational videos that appeal to students and where they go to find them.

Via Leona Ungerer, Helen Brown
Juliana Elisa Raffaghelli's insight:

"79% of students voluntarily watch videos to enhance their understanding of a topic"

to learn the steps necessary to do something successfully, to understand the practical application of a theoretical concept, or to find a video that they can use during their own presentations.

Juliana Elisa Raffaghelli's insight:

Juliana Elisa Raffaghelli's insight:

Learning Analytics and Assessment

Juliana Elisa Raffaghelli's insight:

Learning Analytics is about collecting traces that learners leave behind and using those traces to improve learning. It is similar to Analytics and BigAnalytics draws techniques from a number of communities with long traditions (including data mining, information visualization, language processing, etc.).  Check the 6 articles of this special issue.

Reports | MOOC Research

Juliana Elisa Raffaghelli's insight:

The Learning Design of MOOCs - The Ed Techie

The Learning Design of MOOCs - The Ed Techie | Planetary Education | Scoop.it

I got some Gates funding for the MOOC Research Initiative to look at two things: completion data, and learning design MOOCs. The first part allowed Katy Jordan to finish the work she had started in mapping various factors from over 200 MOOCs that influence completion. You can see more of her work here, and I'll blog on that later.

My part has been using the tools we've developed at the OU for learning design, building on Grainne Conole's work. We use two main tools: the Activity Planner and the Module Map. The first maps student activity across 6 categories, eg assimilative, productive, etc. This is a good way to think about how you want to teach a particular topic. The second one looks at the resources you will need in order to create those activities, and maps them under four headings: Content, Guidance, Demonstration & Communication.
