Virtual reality is one of the hottest edtech trends. Not only are students allowed the opportunity to emerge themselves into a subject but can travel the world from their desk chairs. While not readily available in every classroom, programs such as Google Cardboard aim to make VR headsets cheap and accessible. The majority of students in the USA own a cell phone, and with many of these educational apps available on both iOs and the iTunes-enabled devices, they are becoming more accessible to more students. Educationally, these VR apps allow students to visualize concepts that were confined to the pictures in a textbook

The Padagogy Wheel - It’s Not About The Apps, It’s About The Pedagogy - | Plan de Formación | Scoop.it
The Padagogy Wheel is designed to help educators think – systematically, coherently, and with a view to long term, big-picture outcomes – about how they use mobile apps in their teaching. The Padagogy Wheel is all about mindsets; it’s a way of thinking about digital-age education that meshes together concerns about mobile app features, learning transformation, motivation, cognitive development and long-term learning objectives.

This Pedagogy Wheel is a great resource to refer back to when planning lessons that incorporate ICT's.  I am particularly impressed (and a little overwhelmed) with how many apps there are that can be used at the Modification and Redefinition level of the SAMR Model.

Netiqueta y seguridad en el uso del correo electrónico (email). | Plan de Formación | Scoop.it

9 tips on how to develop Critical Thinking Skills

9 tips on how to develop Critical Thinking Skills | Plan de Formación | Scoop.it
“Critical thinking is no longer a strange concept in the world. People are talking about it everywhere, from university to workplace, from developed countries to poor religions. The importance of critical thinking has never been considered as properly as it is now. Thinking critically is believed to be a new intellect of the modern times that can reflect one person’s ability to analyze daily problems and make the right decision. As it is not a specific talent that people are born with, critical thinking requires practice and efforts. Ironically, while this concept’s popularity spreads out all over the world at surprising speed, not many people know how to develop critical thinking skills effectively. Thus, VKool.com will have you know more about critical thinking and different ways of training yourself to think critically.”

Open Badges – A digital solution for recognising achievement in schools? | Technoteaching

Open Badges – A digital solution for recognising achievement in schools? | Technoteaching | Plan de Formación | Scoop.it

When I first investigated Open Badges, I could see how it could be implemented and earned myself a couple of test badges online via http://www.openbadges.org/en-US/ but at the time the process for issuing badges was a bit daunting. Last Saturday I attended a Computers At School Scotland session hosted by Doug Belshaw where he explained that badges could now be issued using a WordPress plugin, WPBadger. I installed WPBadger on this blog following these instructions and then these instructions, and created and uploaded a simple PNG badge. From there I was able to issue my badge to anyone with a valid email address. As our school website is also built using WordPress, in theory we would be able to issue badges from there although as things stand I don’t think the current version of WPBadger is really suited to the kind of scale that would be required in a secondary school. An alternative is to use badg.us, which is probably easier to set up but still doesn’t seem as though it could cope be easily used with a large number of badges and awards.

Some of the game examples are more KS1 early KS2 but its very very endearing and a huge potential.

Great features available:

Creation Packs with lots of characters and backgrounds

Online image search feature

Upload images from any device linked eg Dropbox, OneDrive etc

Text boxes and formatting for writing

Drawing tools and styles

Share your game

Embed your completed game

Add a challenge mode with leaderboard, wrong answer limit, question timers and game timers

Add a selection of background music

Record your questions

Add recordings for correct and wrong answers

Add questions linked to images eg Year WW1 started, Nelson Mandela, Ou est la plage?

Add a sound board eg record word in Spanish and have it play when you click on the picture

Shape Puzzle eg drag and drop shapes in correct position or fill in missing words eg for sentence construction

Video - although I got a 404 error?

Create one quiz or a whole section of quizzes linked together in one game.

This would be a brilliant resource in the hands of a student. Get them to work with other departments or teachers in junior school to produce a range of activities and get them published!

The SAMR Model for integrating technology into teaching, developed by Dr. Ruben Puentedura, has gained a good deal of exposure in recent years. “SAMR” is an acronym that stands for Substitution, Augmentation, Modification, and Redefinition. The SAMR model provides a technique for moving through degrees of technology adoption to find more meaningful uses of technology in teaching and move away from simply using “tech for tech’s sake”.

Oskar Almazan's curator insight, May 16, 12:49 AM
Phonemic awareness is a skill included within the broad skill of phonological awareness. Phonemic awareness is the ability to recognize and segment words into their constituent individual sounds (phonemes) making them. A phoneme in linguistics is the smallest meaningful sound unit. For instance, the word ‘hat’ is composed of three different phonemes: /h/, /æ/, and /t/. Phonemic awareness is an important skill kids get to learn at an early age. It helps them improve their spelling and reading skills. ‘Children who can not distinguish and manipulate the sounds within spoken words have difficulty recognizing and learning the necessary print=sound relationship that is critical to proficient reading and spelling success.’ In today’s post we are sharing with you three interesting resources to help you with the teaching of phonemic awareness
