Is Plagiarism Down? Depends on How You Define and Measure It | EdSurge News | Plagiarism | Scoop.it

farah jadhavji's curator insight, October 5, 2015 1:55 AM

This articles talks about how the rate of plagiarism has gone up in schools since 1994. The reason students are plagiarizing more nowadays is because of the internet. Students are more likely to copy and paste from wikipedia or yahoo answers because its easier to do and they think they won't get caught. I assume that the time all the schools started to use TurnItIn, the plagiarism rates went a little down, until students started to realize it wasn't really working. Susan Schorn from UTA believes that the database is false advertising and it doesn't work. Tests show that TurnItIn missed over 40% of plagiarized papers which made it so students and teachers couldn't catch or get caught. It isn't so much that the rate of plagiarism is down, its that its not as big of an issue.
