Families sue health insurers to cover wilderness therapy for mental illness - The Boston Globe

Families sue health insurers to cover wilderness therapy for mental illness - The Boston Globe | Woodbury Reports Inc.(TM) Week-In-Review | Scoop.it
A growing number of families are taking on insurance companies that refuse to cover wilderness therapy, including a Massachusetts family that sued Harvard Pilgrim Health Care in May for refusing to pay for their son’s therapy at RedCliff Ascent in Utah.
Lon Woodbury's insight:

The years of evolution of wilderness therapy have seen major changes in the last 30+ years.  In the early days, boot camps were often considered the same as wilderness therapy in the public mind, which resulted in many tragedies in boot camps being blamed on wilderness therapy such as in the GAO report referred to in this article.  The rejection of boot camps as being ineffective and sometimes dangerous and thus rejected by all except government funded programs was an important development.  Improvements in safety and training and use of mental health professionals were other advances.  The result is resistance by insurance companties to paying for wilderness therapy programs is fading.  -Lon
