Unleash your camera’s inner Hulk with a free hack to the firmware

Unleash your camera’s inner Hulk with a free hack to the firmware | pixels and pictures | Scoop.it

In 2012, two Canadian teenagers, Mathew Ho and Asad Muhammad, successfully sent a Lego mini figure up into space using a weather balloon as the vehicle. To document the event from liftoff to crash-land, they rigged a basic Canon point-and-shoot camera to continuously snap photos. While it sounds like a complicated science project, it’s actually something many have successfully accomplished (Ho and Muhammad just made theirs unique by sending the little Lego guy with it and, oh, they’re teens). And hacking the camera might actually be the easy part, thanks to an open-source firmware update.

.../...

Like CHDK, Magic Lantern is open-source software for Canon DSLRS, with an emphasis on enhancing video production (Magic Lantern’s creators don’t like to refer to it as a hack but a separate program that complements the camera’s software, but you get the idea). The supported DSLRs are the ones that can handle video capture, like the EOS 5D Mark II, 60D, Rebel T1i, etc., with future support for the 7D, 5D Mark III, and more. Essentially, it gives these DSLRs many of the similar advanced features that are found in more expensive video cameras.

But unlike CHDK, Magic Lantern is geared more toward advanced users, in particular those who use Canon DSLRs to create movies (although later updates have added features that benefit photographers too). Magic Lantern was originally created to add audio controls to the EOS 5D Mark II, which Canon didn’t provide. Over time, Magic Lantern evolved, adding a ton of extra features. If you own one of the supported cameras and you dabble a bit with video, however, it doesn’t hurt to try out Magic Lantern’s features, as it’s not difficult to install and it runs independently on the memory card.

Once set up, pushing the camera’s Delete button will bring up the extra menus. Magic Lantern’s benefits are many, but some of the notable ones include manual fine-tuning of audio; tools for exposure and focusing; HDR video; bracketing; zebra patterns; and an intervalometer for shooting time lapse and astrophotography. As we’ve mentioned, Magic Lantern is best for more advanced users who’ve gotten to know the ins and outs of their Canon DSLR.

Philippe J DEWOST's insight:

"Of course we can do it : it is just software..." - The story of these hacked firmwares is almost as interesting as what they can deliver.

ZangZing will close soon after MobileMe

ZangZing will close soon after MobileMe | pixels and pictures | Scoop.it

ZangZing had been cleverly standing out as a possible "after MobileMe" solution for those who cannot wait for iOS6 "share from Photostream" feature unveiled at WWDC.

Joseph Ansanelli's team had designed a superior user interface, a clever ingestion mechanism including fetching albums from other sites, along with comprehensive privacy settings while sharing albums with others.

The email below is therefore a total surprise for subscribers as well as a strong disappointment, and we don't understand yet what motivated it.

Now that two consumer photosharing services are gone, which of the remaining ones will stand out and take care of the rest of us ?

Hi Philippe,

Unfortunately, we have some sad news to share.

On July 2nd, ZangZing will no longer accept new users to join or new photos to be uploaded.

On August 31st, we will be shutting down ZangZing and permanently deleting all photos, contact information, and account information.

To download your original photos, please follow these steps:
Sign in at www.zangzing.com/signinMouse-over the album you would like to downloadClick the "i" menu and choose Download. This will create a Zip file of all the original photos in that album. Once each album is completely downloaded, then begin the next album download as simultaneous downloads can become corrupted on some web browsersRepeat this for all your albums

If you have any problems, please refer to this Help article, http://zan.gy/Gzv1Qd.

Thank you for sharing our same passion for design, privacy, and group photo sharing. You inspired us.

The ZangZing Team

Incredible Images of the Massive New Tunnels Hollowing New York City

Incredible Images of the Massive New Tunnels Hollowing New York City | pixels and pictures | Scoop.it

There is a 22-foot-long, 200-ton steel monster under Manhattan. Dead, resting deep somewhere under Grand Central Station and Park Avenue, this machine and her twin brother excavated the massive tunnels that you can see here, one of the largest public transportation works of our time.

Here's an impressive new look at the amazing tunnels and caverns of the East Side Access, an extension of the Long Island Rail Road.

Together, the two massive earthworms and an army of machines and workers were able to eat 346,607 cubic yards (265,000 cubic meters) of New York's bedrock heart, producing 5.6 miles of tunnels and the massive caverns that will house the new station under Grand Central. A project so big that it prompted—unfounded—fears of a major collapse of some old city buildings, like St. Patrick's Cathedral.

The work—which started in 2006—has been so complicated that the entire project has been delayed. Instead of 2014, it will now be operational in 2019. The tunnels extend from Sunnyside, Queens, to Grand Central, routing 24 trains per hour at peak capacity. That's an amazing 162,000 passenger trips to and from Grand Central per day. These new images by New Yorks' Metropolitan Transportation Authority show the progress as of Feb 12 2013

Imaging App Market Analyzed by 6Sight | pixels and pictures | Scoop.it
The photo and video mobile app market is not only booming, it is also changing rapidly. A new study from 6Sight finds that of the 475 top-ranking photo and video apps, 46 percent are less than six months old; 20 percent have just been introduced in the last 90 days.

The study, Photo/Video App Market Analysis, describes the trends in downloads, sales, and grossing rankings for free and paid Android, iPhone, and iPad apps. It also analyzes how these various rankings vary for certain segments. The findings include:

·       Photo and Video apps priced at the minimum store level of $0.99 are more common among top ranking apps introduced in the last 180 days than among older apps

·       iPad and iPhone Photo and Video apps that offer in-app purchasing options receive lower user ratings than those without

·       within the rankings of Photo and Video apps downloaded on iPads, apps that are only available on iPads offer less often photo enhancement functions than those that are also available on iPhones
