Balkans Veggie

Balkans Veggie | PISU13 social media campaigning & social innovation | Scoop.it

My name is Milena and I am also vegetarian. While traveling around West Balkan countries I am always facing with the challenge: finding vegetarian restaurants. This blog is meant to be just a "first aid kit" for finding veggie restaurants at Balkan. But there are probably many of them still hidden somewhere in the tree shadow. Let us discover them together!

Is freedom of speech threatened in Kosovo ?

Is freedom of speech threatened in Kosovo ? | PISU13 social media campaigning & social innovation | Scoop.it

Kosovo has a painful history. Slobodan Milosevic regime tried to keep Albanians in the Dark Age where they were not allowed to express themselves freely. We fought against such discrimination for years, but today, we are facing again similar problems when it comes to the freedom of speech and freedom of expression in Kosovo.

As a citizen of Kosovo, I do strongly believe in the freedom of speech, but expressing yourself freely in Kosovo today is dangerous because you can expose yourself to different kind of threats.

Foursquare - a tool for crowdsourcing and digital diplomacy in Kosovo

Foursquare - a tool for crowdsourcing and digital diplomacy in Kosovo | PISU13 social media campaigning & social innovation | Scoop.it

EVERYONE is on Facebook in Kosovo, and that single social network is what most people associate with social media. Twitter will be in second place, because of its presence in media, not of the active use by much people (as facebook). Anyway there’s more: Foursquare is available worldwide and has 30 million users. It’s a so called location based network, dealing with places where users check-in for several reasons:

- know where friends are right now
- find places in the surrounding area
- get tips for places
- unlock “specials" for discounts
- earn points and mayorships

Why do Women of Kosovo use Social Media?

Why do Women of Kosovo use Social Media? | PISU13 social media campaigning & social innovation | Scoop.it

By being a part of a country where women have been crushed for decades and men have been always the leaders almost in everything, it makes me think a lot about all the changes that happened to Kosovo women in the last years. In Kosovo a woman’s place was usually near the kitchen and always at home taking care about the children. There were only a few women who had jobs outside their homes and they were always watched with a different kind of eye. But after the war of 1999, people started to be more sociable and at least every family had a computer at their houses.

We know that people are curious about different thinks, but in Kosovo a lot of people don’t mind their own business but they try to know everything about their relatives and neighbors life. So to make it all easier, social media was found (especially Facebook).

The usage of Internet in Kosovo

The usage of Internet in Kosovo | PISU13 social media campaigning & social innovation | Scoop.it

Internet penetration in Kosovo is in the process of steady development due to healthy competition and mainly due to government policies and strategies adopted with the aim to reach the maturity of the neighboring countries and EU integration.

Based on  some recent statistics, Kosovo is the leader in the Balkans in Internet usage. The penetration of the internet in Kosovo is similar to the wealthier nations such as Greece and Bulgaria, despite Kosovo’s poverty and unemployment. The Kosovo Association of Information and Communication Technology notes that internet penetration is 72.1%, meaning nearly three-quarters of the population has access to the global computer network.  After the 1999 war, people used internet because they wanted to stay in touch with their families abroad, and young people were focused more on playing games.

Istanbul adventure…

About a month ago I joined the protests against Erdoğan and his policy. I had been amazed by the violence against peaceful protests, and just had to see for myself what was going on. For one week I got to witness various forms of protest in Istanbul. During the day I saw the “standing man”, as a response to violence. You can’t beat a person who is simply standing still… At night people gathered in the parks to discuss politics. One night there was a big protest to commemorate the four people who died at previous protests. After a while the government decided it had been enough, and announced that everybody had to disperse within 20 minutes. Obviously almost nobody left. After about 20 minutes the riot police did as they promised, and I saw how cleared the square.

The effect of social media in our daily lives

The effect of social media in our daily lives | PISU13 social media campaigning & social innovation | Scoop.it

These last two weeks I had the chance to be part of the Social Media Campaigning and Social Innovation course in Prishtina International Summer University (PISU 2013) which made me critically analyze myself on the usage of social networks. I’m a student of political science and international relations, but without any doubt, I learned a lot of useful stuff for my daily life as well as the interconnection of politics with internet. One of the lectures that I was stuck the most and left me thinking was privacy in social networks, in particular Facebook and Twitter which I use the most. After this class I went home and changed all my privacy settings to ‘only me’ because there was plenty of useless information for my 547 friends to know.

Thought for Food

Is giving money to beggars the best way to help them? How sure we really are if the money is spent for their wellbeing? We can’t really know the answer if we can’t reach to the roots of their private life. If we want to help someone in need, let’s consider first to fulfill their needs by offering to buy them a meal or donate the money to social service agencies that provide food, instead of giving money directly to beggar even though It might feel good.

Getting politicians to use social media!

Getting politicians to use social media! | PISU13 social media campaigning & social innovation | Scoop.it

13 years have passed after the last war in our country, and it cannot be called anymore a country that just came out of a war. But it can be called as a country in transition where many new economic and social developments come to take place; where even the word “democracy” gets to be used on daily bases rather than just be mentioned as a word, meaning that the people of Kosovo have the right of speech. Kosovo is often defined as a corrupted country by its citizens. Why do they think so? Is it better if citizens get in a closer touch with their chosen politicians and discuss more in depth about these problems? What would be the solution to this problem of citizen-politician communication?

Social Media Campaign and Innovation - Lessons Learned and Tools to be Used!

Social Media Campaign and Innovation - Lessons Learned and Tools to be Used! | PISU13 social media campaigning & social innovation | Scoop.it

The world around us has become smaller and smaller due to the higher interactions that came with 21st century. Internet is playing a huge role in our life style by making this world flatter because of easier communication through the internet, an idea firstly used by  Thomas L. Friedmann said[1] . By having access to the internet one can have access to other tools by which we can share information as well as gain knowledge from around the world. Being an interesting topic to elaborate, this summer I choose to be part of a course at Prishtina International Summer University named: Social Media Campaigning and Innovation where different tools and techniques were explained on how to gain the best form the internet and practical examples were given on specific topics. Social media is being seen as one of the main factors on gathering people around causes of common interest while providing high collaboration between them.

The State of Media in Kosovo · Arber

A Social Media Story storified by Arber I. Gashi

Kosovo’s media sphere has been the subject of a number of tumultuous changes in the past twelve years since the end of the war. Having been subject to regulation by a number of different institutions, the challenges facing journalists have been considerable. Some challenges, such as establishing a plurality of outlets, ensuring some sustainability and addressing legal concerns have been overcome to a large extent. On the other hand, more work is required to fully establish legal provisions for free speech, limit pressure toward journalists and ensure a professional journalism sphere.
