The new WTO extension building for some 300 staff members offers a compelling view out over Lake Geneva with a sense of lightness and elegance. The idea was to create an extension that was a transparent as possible and did not seem at all solid in order to blend in best with the surrounding park; the proposal used a reduced formal vocabulary to create a long, glass cube on a set-back plinth boasting glazed frontage.

Nevertheless, the project set out to achieve high energy efficiency levels and obtain Swiss Minergie-P certification. Thanks to ingenious facilities technology, a heat recovery system and the use of Nimbus LED luminaires, this ambitious target was achieved even with the entire glass frontage chosen.

Paris-based architects Badia-Berger Architectes have recently completed the University of Versailles Science Library, in France- an efficient building composed of three juxtaposed volumes intersected by a series of voids.

The building acts as a connector inside the university campus, uniting the eastern sloped park and the western sporting grounds, which determines that it doesn't have a main façade, rather, a central position from which its multidirectional nature stems.

The library is comprised of three juxtaposing volumes intersected by a series of voids, which allow for abundant daylight to pour into the building, as well as creating a series of transparencies between the two connected terrains — the park and the sporting grounds. The three separate volumes harbour respectively the entry hall, the reading rooms and internal spaces. "The shape is an expression of our perception of the program and our response to the requirements of a low energy building," state architects Marie-Hélène Badia and Didier Berger, "fully acknowledging lighting and thermal comfort as well as highlighting the site's contrasts."

The World Green Center in Chile aims to maximize the amount of public spaces through sustainable design.


The LEED-pending project in Chile has a sprawling green roof designed by Santiago-based cCe Arquitectos. More than 72% of the ground surface is utilized as green space and the completely landscaped roof is covered with shaded terraces and gardens that reduce the heat island effect. Passive design is incorporated within the façade, which reduces solar radiation and minimizes the energy used for air conditioning.

A VRV climate control system is designed to save up to 40% of the total energy compared to traditional office buildings in Santiago. Focusing specifically on the worker activity, the architects made sure each part of the work day is improved through a connection to nature – from a meeting room to an outdoors lunch break.
