Informational text reading requires daily practice to become proficient.  We should make, as a priority, article and/or other informational text reading occur daily in all disciplines.

Anderson Elementary launched a program in which teachers are spending less time on fiction books like "Cat in the Hat" and more time on informational texts, such as instruction manuals, newspapers, magazines and nonfiction books.
Stephanie Thomas's insight:

I think we need to do this in Parkrose from elementary through high school and make it a primary focus.  Does this mean shifting our priorities in literature within the English curriculum?  How do we get all subject disciplines on board?  In order for kids to "practice" reading difficult informational text, we need to provide access to a variety of articles and college-level texts on a regular, maybe even daily, basis.

The Library of Congress offers classroom materials and professional development to help teachers effectively use primary sources from the Library's vast digital collections in their teaching.
Stephanie Thomas's insight:

So far they only have language arts and history/social science materials as an option.  I like this because you can choose Common Core or OR state standards and it gives the teacher resources and an actual lesson plan.
