Shutter Speed: Freezing Action

Shutter Speed: Freezing Action | Photography How to's (Should & Must Know Topics) | Scoop.it
Whenever you press the shutter button of your camera you record a moment in time. The faster the shutter speed you use the thinner the slice of time captured. This means that we now record events that are far too fast to be seen with the human eye.

In photography shutter speed often takes second place to aperture when choosing your camera settings, however when you need to freeze the action you need to set you camera to TV mode and crank up your shutter speed.

How do I get Black Backgrounds in my Photographs?

How do I get Black Backgrounds in my Photographs? | Photography How to's (Should & Must Know Topics) | Scoop.it

The short answer is, black backgrounds are created as a result of a 5 ‘stop’ difference in exposure levels between the main subject and its background.

The long answer is : Your camera is unable to see as well as the human eye.

This is one of the reasons, why we sometimes get very contrasty images with ‘blown’ highlights in light areas and very dark shadows in other areas.

Our eyes can see up to 16 different levels (or in camera terms ‘f stops’) of light, which means we can differentiate between very light areas and very dark areas and still see detail in both.
