A Short Lesson in Perspective

1. The creative industry operates largely by holding ‘creative’ people ransom to their own self-image, precarious sense of self-worth, and fragile – if occasionally out of control ego. We tend to set ourselves impossibly high standards, and are invariably our own toughest critics. Satisfying our own lofty demands is usually a lot harder than appeasing any client, who in my experience tend to have disappointingly low expectations. Most artists and designers I know would rather work all night than turn in a sub-standard job. It is a universal truth that all artists think they a frauds and charlatans, and live in constant fear of being exposed. We believe by working harder than anyone else we can evaded detection. The bean-counters rumbled this centuries ago and have been profitably exploiting this weakness ever since. You don’t have to drive creative folk like most workers. They drive themselves. Just wind ‘em up and let ‘em go.

[ The Incoherent Light ]: Ben Cauchi

[ The Incoherent Light ]: Ben Cauchi | Photography Now | Scoop.it

In its earliest years photography attracted a curious mix of charlatans and visionaries, each pursuing its innate tendency toward spectacle for very different ends. As the codes that would shape our understanding of the medium were still being determined there was, correspondingly, no definite expectation of what it could do. Ben Cauchi is an artist acutely sensitive to these other histories and his work draws on the same visual rhetoric that was first elaborated in the blatant deceptions of that early photography, recasting its charged aura of truthfulness as a kind a blackly humorous burlesque.

While 2011 marked many milestones for mobile photography (including the explosive growth of Instagram, numerous major gallery showings of mobile photography art, the first major mobile photography conference, the formation of mobile shooter “super groups” like the Mobile Photo Group, JUXT and AMPt, the abundance of mobile images in photojournalism, and so much more) that it didn’t seem possible 2012 could be any bigger for the nascent art of mobile photography.

I work by impulse. No philosophy. No ideas. Not by the head but by the eyes.
Eventually inspiration comes. Instinct is the same as inspiration, and eventually it comes.”

Conscientious Extended | Meditations on Photographs: A Car on Fire at the Mall by JM Colberg | Photography Now | Scoop.it

I found myself at the local mall yesterday, at the book shop, to look at magazines. I live in the countryside where not much ever happens. A tornado might come through, or a strip club might explode, but those are very rare events. And regardless, they tend to happen further down south. I certainly did not expect to look up from some magazine to see a car on fire right outside of the building I was in.
