The renaissance of the Arab world, so long in gestation and so often aborted, now seems to be happening. It is the people who have asserted their power, having transcended fear, thus turning many ordinary citizens into heroes who will go down in the annals of history.

Vigil for the Cuban Missile Crisis

Never had the world been closer to a nuclear holocaust. When President John F. Kennedy announced the presence of nuclear weapons on Cuba pointed at the United States, and threatened to invade the island if Khrushchev refused to remove them, many thought it was the beginning of a nuclear war.

down with artspeak! (or, don’t let yourself go) | Shooting Wide Open | Photography Now | Scoop.it

Cruising a discussion forum the other day, I stumbled onto a debate about the gender biases inherent in the phrase “let yourself go.” Apparently the implications of this insult are much worse when leveled at women than men (read: objectification, body image issues and other similarly nasty words). Well, I think, this is why you should never openly admit it.

The Matric Dance: A Right of Passage for Girls Living in a Cape Town Ghetto | Photography Now | Scoop.it

This series of portraits of girls all dressed up for their Matric Dance was photographed on the Cape Flats, a vast area outlying Cape Town. The Flats have been described as “apartheid’s dumping ground”, a place which still possesses all the attendant problems of a formerly forcibly displaced and fragmented society: poverty, crime, drug addiction and gangsterism.

Two Way Lens: Karen Halverson | Photography Now | Scoop.it

Editing one’s work is challenging. I think it helps to let the work sit for a while until after the first fervent rush. Edit out anything you doubt, but revisit the rejects once in a while. Maybe you missed something. Let “accidents” inform you. Maybe they’ll lead you in a new direction. On the other hand, you may find your first loves don’t hold up with time.

Los hermanos // The brothers (by Elin Høyland) | Photography Now | Scoop.it

I was working on a photo project where two people were closely connected to each other. I’d heard about two elderly brothers living together on the outskirts of the small village of Vågå in Norway. I rang them and we made an arrangement to meet at the Co-operative supermarket, after their weekly shopping trip. I wanted to photograph them in their home so we got in my car.

Pussy Riot’s activist beginnings

Pussy Riot’s activist beginnings | Photography Now | Scoop.it

Many admire the braveness of Yekaterina Samutsevich, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, and Maria Alyokhina, others object to the form and the choice of location for their shock performance. But make no mistake; the impact of the “Punk Prayer” on public opinion was not the chance result of a post-adolescent prank. At least two of the three defendants have emerged from a scene of young conceptual artists that have been engaged in political activism for years. They knew exactly where to hit so that it hurt most.

New Statesman - Ludwig Wittgenstein’s passion for looking, not thinking

New Statesman - Ludwig Wittgenstein’s passion for looking, not thinking | Photography Now | Scoop.it
Ray Monk decodes the philosophy in the philosopher's photographs.

Thinking in pictures,” Sigmund Freud once wrote, “stands nearer to unconscious processes than does thinking in words, and is unquestionably older than the latter both ontogenetically and phylogenetically.” There is, in other words, something primordial, something foundational, about thinking visually.

NADAV KANDER: Obama's People - The Book | Photography Now | Scoop.it

January 18 2009, a special edition of the New York Times Magazine published, Obama's People, portraits of the incoming administration of Barack Obama by Nadav Kander. This series was commissioned by Kathy Ryan, Director of Photography, and Gerald Merzorati, editor of the New York Times. Photographic critic, Francis Hodgson wrote, "Nadav Kander has been a brilliant portraitist for years. He has published three series which I see as specific precursors to Obama's People. In all three, the plain background is there, each sitter posed like a medieval saint (or devil) in a niche on a cathedral wall."
