Compelling Portraits of People Who Live Alone in the Forest

Compelling Portraits of People Who Live Alone in the Forest | ART | Conceptual Photography & Fine Art | Scoop.it
While most people all over the world live in a community with others around them, Russian photographer Danila Tkachenko captures those that choose to turn their backs on this lifestyle. His compelling series Escape documents people who instead live a solitary existence in the wilderness. They make their homes in the Russian and Ukrainian forest and fashion makeshift dwellings from the land.
We see Tkachenko’s subjects appear in different ways throughout the series; some convey a sense of peacefulness as they lay on the trees, while others look gaunt and less at ease. The photographer is sure to show their homes, too, and it’s remarkable to see the different structures that people build and the objects they collect. Surrounded by the lush, green forest, it’s where these individuals have taken refuge from their former lives.
All of these photographs and more are compiled into a book titled Escape, which is available from Peperoni Books.

Couples Passionately Kissing by Ben Lamberty

Couples Passionately Kissing by Ben Lamberty | ART | Conceptual Photography & Fine Art | Scoop.it
Though at first glance these photos look like stills from the strangers kissing video that went viral, in actuality this series was created even before that video was shot. Last summer, photographer Ben Lamberty took a spontaneous photo of a couple kissing and the photo turned out to be, in his words, "so cool" that he decided he needed to make a series out of it. The photos would eventually land in the December 2013 issue of a German publication called Zeit Magazine. The passionate images of two people kissing were paired with lines from famous songs like this one from The Beatles circa 1967: "All you need is love, all you need is love, all you need is love, love, love is all you need."

After he first came up with the concept, Ben asked his friends to volunteer. Some of them were real couples while others were just good friends. As you can tell, a few of them dabbled in modeling but, according to the photographer, "all of them are creative characters." Ben sat back as a quiet…

Self-Portraits Explore Fragmented Distortions of Reality

Self-Portraits Explore Fragmented Distortions of Reality | ART | Conceptual Photography & Fine Art | Scoop.it
Created by photographer Cornelia Hediger, Doppelgänger (which means "double walker" in German) and Doppelgänger II are a beautiful exploration of the self in relation to the world around us. Inspired by the many fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm, the Switzerland-based artist pieces together multiple images into a grid to create slightly misaligned realities and distortions.
The oddly sized and exaggerated components produce compelling narratives about body image, self-worth, and our conscious versus our unconscious thoughts. Hediger steps in front of the camera to perform as her own subject. To build the backgrounds, she often transforms her apartment with fresh paint or wallpaper, new lighting, and intriguing accessories. She can spend anywhere from eight hours to three days shooting a project, and then she non-digitally assembles the fragmented pieces together. In doing so, Hediger creates visually-split personalities set within uncomfortable scenarios.

Before becoming a fashion photographer, Randall Slavin was a struggling actor who worked at a gas station across the street from a headshot photography studio. After watching beautiful women go in and out of the studio all day, he wandered over there and struck up a friendship with the owner. He didn’t know anything about photography but was promptly hired to shoot actors' headshots. Over time, he built an amazing portfolio, photos of actors in and around LA. Some of these actors have since become Oscar winners. Each of Slavin's shots are full of drama and intensity and they all have a cinematographic feel to them. Added: Remarkably, we got in touch with Slavin after we wrote this post to ask him a few questions. Read that inspiring interview, below.

I’m a bit of a dreamer. I’m also a huge aviation geek, and I often catch myself browsing the web at 2am looking up articles on aviation and aviation history. So when I found Anthony Toth and learned more about his life’s work, I knew that I had my next personal photography project in mind. As I'm mostly an architectural photographer, I got bored of waiting around for an airline to hire me to photograph their next ad campaign, so I decided to hire myself into my dream gig.

21-Year-Old Photographer's Strikingly Expressive Portraits Peer into the Soul

21-Year-Old Photographer's Strikingly Expressive Portraits Peer into the Soul | ART | Conceptual Photography & Fine Art | Scoop.it
When she's not busy studying biology at the University of Granada in southern Spain, 21-year-old Cristina Hoch captures strikingly powerful portraits of her friends and family. Achieving a unique high-contrast, low-saturation aesthetic with cool tones, Hoch photographs the beautiful interplay of natural light and shadow on her subject's faces as they look into the distance or right at the camera. Often using her freckled siblings as the subjects of her most evocative shots, the self-taught photographer manages to produce portraits that are as expressive as they are visually dramatic.
The most distinguishing element of Hoch's portraits is the focus on the eyes. Knowing that a person's gaze can transmit the emotions she wants to convey, Hoch meticulously sharpens and illuminates the eyes and other distinctive facial features in post-processing. The result is a compellingly piercing stare that not only expresses deep emotions, but also seems to peer right into the viewer's soul.

Revealing Photos of People Lying Down in a Week's Worth of Trash

Revealing Photos of People Lying Down in a Week's Worth of Trash | ART | Conceptual Photography & Fine Art | Scoop.it
California-based photographer Gregg Segal provides a visual representation of the trash problem in the US with his revealing series 7 Days of Garbage. The photographer invited people from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds—friends, neighbors, acquaintances, and near-strangers—to come to his backyard with a week's worth of their garbage. Spread out over natural backgrounds like sand, grass, and water, the subjects wallow in the trash they've accumulated over seven days, providing a shocking glimpse of consumption and waste in the US.
While some subjects filtered out the most disgusting garbage in their bags, others let all of the contents be photographed. Takeout boxes, crumpled paper, orange peels, and empty bottles form a bed under the subjects, painting a picture of their different lifestyles in addition to their rubbish. Segal says, "Subjects are photographed surrounded by their trash in a setting that is part nest, part archeological record. We’ve made our bed and in it we…

Dan Winters Takes Timeless Celebrity Portraits (16 Favorites) | ART | Conceptual Photography & Fine Art | Scoop.it
Take away all the silly props, put away all the flamboyant clothing and create a portrait, a snapshot of a person that will stay with us forever. Dan Winters is a famous photographer who illuminates his subjects to reveal something most of us would often miss. You can read more about his work and his inspirations at the PDN Gallery website. Here are a few of my favorite quotes. "I try to make an image that's interesting and compelling and relatively representational of what the individual looks like. I think that when someone sits for a portrait theyr'e allowing you to make a physical object out of their physical representation. I don't think I go out of my way to be overly flattering. But I do try to be true to the subject." "For me, it's about walking around in life with the intent of capturing moments." “I get up every day and that’s what I do, make photographs, whether I’m being paid to or not. I love it, love it, love it.”

I'm Famished

If anyone can bring a fairy tale to life, there is no doubt in my mind that it would be Annie Leibowitz. Using elaborate sets and costumes, she recreates the story of Hansel and Gretel. The spread, titled Little Girl & Boy Lost, appears in the December 2009 issue of Vogue. Inspired by Richard Jones's production of the 1893 Engelbert Humperdinck opera, opening December at the Metropolitan Opera, the gorgeous photo shoot even features a surprise guest, Ms. Paparazzi herself (aka Lady Gaga). See if you can spot her. First photo: (above) Brother and sister are home alone with not a morsel to eat. In Vogue's interpretation of the Met's production, which opens December 14, Hansel and Gretel are played by actor Andrew Garfield and model Lily Cole. Far From Home
