tips for photographing children

tips for photographing children | Photography - Fuji X, Nikon, Leica, technique | Scoop.it
Marisa and I have worked together for 8 years and have photographed
hundreds of different types of people in countless settings, so we have a
trick or two up our sleeves for capturing the moment we're going for. Kids
and families are subjects we shoot often at the studio, so you could say
we're pros on the topic of photographing children. Buuuut...we're also both
moms of two squirming baby girls, sleep deprived and often grabbing for our
smartphones to grab a quick pic as easily as possibl

About Photography: Nikon D5500 -- Hands on review

About Photography: Nikon D5500 -- Hands on review | Photography - Fuji X, Nikon, Leica, technique | Scoop.it

"The latest crop of APS-sized cameras are truly amazing. Just a few years ago a camera like the new Nikon D5500 would have been a dream come true. Cameras like this have opened the field of photography to shooters who would otherwise never been able to enter it. It has all the features and capabilities of the "big boys" in a much smaller, less expensive, not as durable body -- for what it is and what it can deliver, it is sensational."

Behind the Shot: Flames of the North: Digital Photography Review

Behind the Shot: Flames of the North: Digital Photography Review | Photography - Fuji X, Nikon, Leica, technique | Scoop.it

"In this article I'd like to talk about an Aurora shot I achieved using a special technique. I took the image during the first of two 'Land of Ice' photo workshops I guided in Southern Iceland earlier this year. ...The most important and interesting aspect of the image is that it's focus-stacked at f/2.8. In addition to one shot for the mountains and sky, I shot 7 images for the piece of ice in the foreground, using the same exact parameters. This raises 2 questions: how I did this at night, and why I chose to shoot this way."

About Photography: Focus stacking for incredible detail and depth of field with the Nikon D810

About Photography: Focus stacking for incredible detail and depth of field with the Nikon D810 | Photography - Fuji X, Nikon, Leica, technique | Scoop.it
Tom Grill's insight:

Focusing stacking means taking a lot of photos of the scene from multiple focus points covering the entire length of the subject from front to back, manually moving the focus a fraction of an inch each time until the whole subject has been covered. The natural camera choice was the Nikon D810 for its extremely high resolution. The lens was a 60mm macro set to f/5.6, which I have determined from prior shoots was an ideal aperture for this type of assembled image.

About Photography: Useful photography apps for your Android smart phone

About Photography: Useful photography apps for your Android smart phone | Photography - Fuji X, Nikon, Leica, technique | Scoop.it

"These days there is an APP for everything. So I began to wonder if there were any handy photography utilities that might be convenient to have with me at all times. Two items that immediately came to mind were a light meter and manual flash calculator. I sometimes take my old film cameras out for fun and carry a small Sekonic light meter with me. Having an accurate meter APP on my phone means I could leave the meter at home. On occasion an hand held light meter reading could be helpful even with my DSLR or mirrorless cameras, especially in situations where I think the light is fooling the through-the-lens meter."

About Photography: A tale of two camera bags -- perfect for a Fuji X or small DSLR system

About Photography: A tale of two camera bags -- perfect for a Fuji X or small DSLR system | Photography - Fuji X, Nikon, Leica, technique | Scoop.it

"Let me confess to something right up front: I am a sucker for a tailor-fit camera bag, especially if it is compact, convenient, and easy to carry. I already own too many camera bags, but that didn't stop me from looking at some of the newer models.

This is a tale of two camera bags I found on my recent search. One is a smaller, relatively inexpensive model, perfect for a mirrorless camera body with 2-3 lenses, plus some accessories. The other is a bit larger, considerably more expensive, stylish, and very well-made."

Relocation & my new Fuji XE-2 Mirrorless camera | Jack Graham

Relocation & my new Fuji XE-2 Mirrorless camera | Jack Graham | Photography - Fuji X, Nikon, Leica, technique | Scoop.it

I would like to take this opportunity to again thank all of my good friends, my workshop attendees, sponsors and supporters for making 2013 a truly memorable year. I spent about 200 nights on the road conducting over 20 workshops plus the 2 we did in Iceland. It looks like 2014 will be even more interesting with new locations and new opportunities. I was quite amazed to see that I actually made very few images compared to other years. Maybe I’m getting really picky?  In 2014 I am going to try and do a bit more photography for myself on the days when I can. My fellow (successful) workshop leaders know all too well that office time is plentiful and gets in the way of being out in the field. One of the myths of being a pro photographer is that you will shoot more images.......
