Spheres of Surrealism - Photography by Karl Dmitri Bishop

Spheres of Surrealism - Photography by Karl Dmitri Bishop | Photography News Journal | Scoop.it

Karl Dmitri Bishop – the Unconscious, the Absurd and the Fantastic.

Are these photos from this world? This question rises looking at Karl Dmitri Bishop’s works. His images take us back into the spheres of Surrealism. And further.

Bishop seems to pick up several techniques from 1920s Surrealists to create certain pictures in his black and white images that leave our common surroundings behind. Overlays and double exposures evoke dreamlike impressions. The photos origin lies clearly in today’s world, but by creating his collages Bishop opens up an entire new space, not only in his images but also for the spectator’s view. Looking at his photos feels like making a journey. Layer by Layer: you enter a whole different — yes a rather surreal — world. Our common understanding seems to be left behind. And even though his compositions question todays’ status quo one thing is revealed: Life is more than just an image with one dimension, one country or one feeling.

Lookfilter.com - A starting point for creativity's insight:
Do you think it’s important to study photography?

Somebody once told me “If you want to be a photographer, you have to go to university”. That really upset me and made me even more determined to prove them wrong. Creativity comes from within, I believe my work mirrors my untapped thoughts and desires.
I taught myself through trial and error, developing my own sense of style. I don’t take photos the professional way. I’m a bit more DIY, that’s what makes me different.

Steve McCurry on photography's globalised challenge | Phaidon

Steve McCurry on photography's globalised challenge | Phaidon | Photography News Journal | Scoop.it

Steve McCurry, the brilliant Magnum photographer, is forever travelling the globe. So it's probably best to pay attention when he talks about how the world is changing. In an interview with the US website, American Photo, based around his latest book, Untold: The Stories Behind the Photographs, the photographer laments the planet's growing homogeneity.

He explained to the magazine that, when in Atlanta late last year, he went out looking for a high-density neighbourhood, like those found in Brooklyn or Queens, in which to shoot some pictures. "But nobody really walks there," he marveled. "It's like LA. There's virtually no pedestrian traffic unless you're somewhere like Sunset Blvd."

This narrowing of aesthetic diferences is something that Steve has noticed the world over. "When I walk through an airport, I think, 'This is the future.' All airports look the same. They're steel and glass. You walk through a shopping mall in India and it could be in Cleveland. There's almost no difference."

Street photography around the world | Photographer: Maciej Dakowicz

Street photography around the world | Photographer: Maciej Dakowicz | Photography News Journal | Scoop.it

"Most people say that street photography features people photographed on the street in unposed situations. For me this definition is simply too broad as it includes portraiture, reportage and peopled cityscape, which might have nothing to do with the genre. For me this broad definition can be narrowed easily to define proper street photography by adding just one word – “a twist”. A little twist – something clever, funny, unexpected, surprising or ambiguous. Something making you scratch your head, something putting a smile on your face… And the photo does not have to be taken on the street – it can be shot indoors, on the beach or in the forest. What matters is that little “twist”.

What are the key elements of a good photo? In my opinion it is the content, composition and light. The content is most important for me. Sometimes a poorly composed and lit photograph still can be good, what matters is the message it conveys. The composition is the way elements are placed and related to each other in the frame. It greatly depends on the distance from the subject – usually the closer you get the more dynamic perspectives you can achieve that can make your compositions more interesting.

The light is what illuminates the scene and produces shadows and highglights in the image. It can be natural or artificial. It can be a direct sunlight (which can be soft or harsh depending on the time of the day), soft ambient light in the shade or flash produced by the flashgun on top of the camera. When these three elements come together nicely in one frame you most probably have a great photo."- Maciej Sakowicz

Why Annie Leibovitz Is Wrong About the State of Photography

Why Annie Leibovitz Is Wrong About the State of Photography | Photography News Journal | Scoop.it

A reporter at the Cannes Lions Festival, surely seeking a quotable moment, asked Annie Leibovitz yesterday to describe the state of her profession. The resulting video is actually low on zingers, but even if you acknowledge her accomplishments and reputation (and set aside those stories about how, despite her reputation, she’s actually had a difficult time selling her work), there’s still ample reason to believe that Ms. Leibovitz no longer knows what she’s talking about.

William Hanna's curator insight, June 6, 2013 10:47 AM

I personally find plugins to be a double edged sword.  Yes, they can definitely speed up your work.  However, if you do not thoroughly review a plugin before using one, it can work against you!  Familiarize yourself completely with any plugin  before carelessly grabing the first one you find the appears to meet your needs.  You'll save yourself time and effort and the possibility of a poorly developed plugin setting you even further back.
