It’s common to hear photography characterised as an innately democratic technology, often in counter-point to traditional ‘skilled’ art forms which are seen as being more exclusive and difficult to access.

Gisela Moniz's curator insight, May 10, 2013 9:00 AM

I've been in touch with Paulo from long ago, meeting him now and then.. He pursued obssessively his subjects through his dark camera until becoming himself a sepctre or should i say an incarnation of his obssessions...

«Paulo Nozolino only makes black and white photographs and they are dominated by an impossible darkness that seems impenetrable to light. The photographs were made all over the world — notably in countries of the Arab world — but in the majority of cases it would be difficult to attribute a specific location to them. Photographs from Auschwitz are the decisive exception. Auschwitz appears as the absolute place and time that orientates everything else. In thirty years of a career as a photographer, Nozolino has constantly intensified his tragic vision of reality: this is visualised in pictures that originate from his own biography and travels; in pictures of men, women and children; in pictures of birth, love making and death.
FAR CRY assembles for the first time photographs from Nozolino’s different projects over the years, to form a new narrative, untold until now: the narrative of beginning and ending, and at the same time the narrative of his life’s work.»

Photography as a way of expressing personal points of view over the world
Gisela Moniz's insight:

As a person who worked all her life in the field of publishing, and a lot of others interests where narrative is always in the core of everything, that is, even we talk "science" we hardly can't get rid of Being a "subject". So, loving the art of photographing almost as much as writing, I came very close to the meaning of the principle that a picture is worth 1000 words. That's what, with a personal pleasure, I intend to explore here.

1000 Words Photography Magazine Blog: 1000 Words Photography Magazine 15 | Photography as a narrative art | Scoop.it

Fresh from its UK premier at Derby’s FORMAT International Photography Festival, we feature Thomas Sauvin’s Beijing Silvermine project – an extraordinary archive of found photographs that picture ‘ordinary’ people stepping out of the shadow of China’s Cultural Revolution – with an accompanying essay by Gordon Macdonald.

Francis Hodgson celebrates the lifetime of powerful work produced by maverick photographer Tom Wood, and offers opinion as to why his first ever UK retrospective, currently on display at The National Media Museum in Bradford, is long overdue; Debra Klomp Ching delves into the pages of Marten Lange’s Another Language to find a cryptic index of nature; andPeggy Sue Amison speaks to emerging photographer Daisuke Yokota about his experimental practice of multi-processing and re-photographing that attempts to capture ideas of how memory is affected by the passage of time.

Elsewhere, Bridget Coaker examines narrative, process and the book form in her review of Elementary Calculus by J Carrier - a series of publicly private moments of migrants and refugees in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem; and finally, we rinse your eyes with vivid technocolour via a project entitled Sunday by Dutch photographer Paul Kooiker. Brad Feuerhelm, introducing the work, describes it as “a fountain of false nostalgias, an anachronism that results in a new kind of noir.”

In our dedicated Books section, David Moore considers what it means to return to and publish old work as he grapples with Alec Soth’s Looking for Love, 1996, Michael Grieve provides some orienting fragments of the back story for In Almost Every Picture 12, the latest publication by editor-extraordinaire Erik Kesselswhile Brad Feuerhelm shines the spotlight on Collected Shadows from the Archive of Modern Conflict.

Me Into You is New York-based photographer Keren Moscovitch’s self-published monograph chronicling her experiences in an open relationship.

Gisela Moniz's insight:

Through this process, I became very aware of society’s relationship to sexuality, and began to focus on those secret places many people typically consider too private to share. The camera became an integral part of my intimate life – as the boundaries dissolved in my relationships, so, too did the boundaries of what I was willing to share through the lens.—Keren Moscovitch

Representing the Disaster through Symbols and Metaphors at Visual Culture Blog by @MarcoBohr | Photography as a narrative art | Scoop.it

As part of my ongoing research on the photographic representation of post-tsunami landscapes – or the photographic representation of 3.11 in short – I want to look at artists whose work deals with the representation of the disaster more indirectly. By doing so, I hope to discover the various methods that artists use to make work about 3.11 whether this is metaphorically, symbolically or by mere suggestion.

Featuring a selection of meaty essays by David Evans, Christopher Bucklow, Gerry Badger and Ian Jeffrey it is a veritable banquet for the brain - one that provides a perfect accompaniment to an exhibition that arguably offers the most expanded view of what photographic practice is, or can be, since the prize’s inception.  Below is a series of video interviews with the four finalists: Mishka Henner, Cristina de Middel, Chris Killip and Adam Broomberg & Oliver Chanarin that are worth sitting down to watch. The winner will be announced at the award evening on 10 June 2013. To read our review of the shortlisted artists and their work click here. Who gets your vote?"

The J. Paul Getty Museum presents Ed Ruscha, an exhibition from April 9th to September 29th, 2013 at the The Getty Center, West Pavilion.

Gisela Moniz's insight:

"Photography has played a central role in Ed Ruscha's artistic practice, most notably in the photobooks he began publishing in 1963. Highlighting important recent acquisitions by the Getty Museum and the Getty Research Institute, this exhibition features a selection of prints and materials related to Twentysix Gasoline Stations (1963), Some Los Angeles Apartments (1965), and Every Building on the Sunset Strip (1966). Also on view for the first time are contact sheets from his shoot of the Pacific Coast Highway (1974–75), one of the many streets he has documented extensively since 1965. The exhibition offers a concentrated look at Ruscha's engagement with vernacular architecture, the urban landscape, and car culture."
