It's Nice That : Yolanda Dominguez

Most people would agree that fashion photography is a different world – completely removed from the realities of everyday life – but to make that point in a clever and powerful way is pretty hard. Step forward Madrid-based artist Yolanda Dominguez, whose most recent piece recreated fashion magazine poses in normal situations. The results, particularly the public reactions, are funny, thought-provoking and revealing. We spoke to Yolanda about the work, feminism in art, and the creative scene in Spain.

CONTACT LENS: Shifting Strategies, Same Strategy - Photo Essay - JPG

For Morse code to function, it demands quiet, empty spaces between tones. Communication, too, is predicated on the spaces between words, the absences as much as the fricatives. Dots and dashes are neither without the withoutness between them.

Douglas Beasley Photography: China: A Couple's Vision Quest Journey

I had the pleasure of being with Doug in Tuscany one summer and love the work he does and inspires others to do.  This is his blog and he's featuring the work of a couple's vision quest. Love their images.

"Dinah and Barry McNew are a semi-retired couple who have attended many of my workshops over the years including "Zen and the Art of Photography"at Santa Fe Workshops, "Spirit of Place: Guatemala", "Dramatic Portrait: Figure in the Badlands" and most recently "Spirit in the Middle Kingdom, China" in March. I was so moved by the images they made and the experience they had in China and wanted to share some of them with you."

It's Nice That : Eric Cahan: Sky Series

When you look up, it’s supposed to make you happy – something to do with the blood pooling at the back of your head probably. It’s the same simple pleasure to see the Sky Series by Eric Cahan. Sublime and cinematic, his graduated windows of sky appear so perfectly abstract that it’s almost startling to see the fractus edge of a cloud or lump of land appear on the horizon. Using film-makers filters to picture vast spaces, he captures the subtle and surreal effect of time and place. Similar in its colourful intensity to Trevor Jackson’s Nowhere series or early Rothko, Cahan has a unique, scientific specificity to his work as these images show…

homo faber - man as maker

homo faber - man as maker
Curated by Anna Gleeson

I'm interested in making as an activity in its own right. I like tangible things - objects, installations or buildings. I like that they can contain a small aesthetic universe with their own vocabulary of materials, shapes, colours and surfaces. I like to trace the series of decisions the maker has made and to notice the mark of the hand, machine or process that made it.
I enjoy these objects in the same way my brothers enjoyed watching skating videos before they went skating. I'm thinking, phwaorrrr.

Here is a collection of things that made me think phwaorrrr.
