Chinese Sentiment | Photographer: Shen Wei 沈玮

Chinese Sentiment | Photographer: Shen Wei 沈玮 | PHOTOGRAPHERS | Scoop.it

Shen Wei’s Chinese Sentiment series was photographed from 2008 to 2010 in Mainland China. The series is the artist’s personal journey to explore the authentic China, from both public and private perspectives. The series shows a poetic and romantic side of China. Consistent with Shen Wei's sensual and emotional style, the images are loving and keenly felt. Shen Wei’s first monograph, Chinese Sentiment, with an introduction by Peter Hessler, was published by Charles Lane Press (New York) in May, 2011.

Photo report's insight:

"I am a Chinese photographer currently works in both New York and Shanghai. I am fascinated with people and culture and obsessed with travel and technology." said Shen Wei.

Shen Wei 沈玮 is a Chinese artist known for his intimate portraits of others and himself, as well as his photographic exploration of contemporary China.

Born in Shanghai, China, Shen Wei lives in New York City. Having grown up in a shanty town in Yangpu District of Shanghai, he began his art training at an early age at a local Children's Palace.

Shen Wei’s work has been exhibited and published internationally. In 2007, American Photo magazine named Shen Wei one of the Top 15 Emerging Artists in the world. In 2008, he was included in the Photo District News’ 30 photographers to watch list. Shen Wei is the winner of 2012 Philadelphia Museum of Art Photography Portfolio Competition.

This work, Yiwen & Graig, is from a project with fashion designer Liulu for her label Luvon.

Quentin Shih a.k.a Shi Xiaofan is a fine art photographer who focuses on portrait, fashion and commercial photography. Shih started out taking photographs of his musician friends and artists before gradually moving into fashion and commercial photography. He is a self-taught photographer and he currently lives and works between Beijing and New York. His visual style is often dreamy and bleak at the same time, with a focus on storytelling as he believes readers should always read beyond what is seen in a photograph.

In an old brick warehouse in a Chinese boomtown, workers have thousands of jeans to scrub before dawn. The machines they use — to create the vintage look — send into the air lung-clogging blue dust.
Photo report's insight:

Working more than a decade as an independent photojournalist with leading magazines and newspapers, I specialise in reaching people in hidden, harsh or sensitive situations. Whether tackling themes such as authoritarianism in Russia, exploitation in China or illegal immigration in Europe, I aim to get inside the worlds of the people involved. Through my photography and writing, I want to challenge preconceptions, expose hypocrisy and condemn abuse as much as I celebrate strength and humanity. For the last four years I've been based in Moscow, doing reportage and corporate assignments in Russia, China and beyond. Previously I lived in Amsterdam, working in Western Europe. I speak Russian, Mandarin and Cantonese Chinese, English and Dutch. Some of my projects are commissioned, while others are self-initiated. I apply the same passion, persistence and discipline to both. I also show work in galleries and museums, including the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, which collected a body of my work. In my previous job I worked as a Reuters correspondent, covering China from Beijing and managing a financial reporting bureau in Shenzhen city. Before that, I was at Cambridge University, reading Philosophy and Political Sciences. I was born in Hong Kong in 1974.
