Because We Love You, vol 80: Ellen von Unwerth Photographs Chanel Iman In 1970s “Love Hangover” | Photo | Scoop.it
A short clip of model Chanel Iman frolicking away in a sort of 70s, hazily filmed fashion editorial. Shot by the always awesome Ellen von Unwerth — she of the spectacular Fräulein book — the Love Hangover video is an offshoot of the Galore magazine cover of Iman also shot by von Unwerth. There are worse things to look at for 90 seconds today…

Is post production bad? | Matthew Maddock

Is post production bad? | Matthew Maddock | Photo | Scoop.it
I am going to write a series of short articles about some of the post production techniques I use, but as part of that I thought I’d start off with a debate on the use of post production in general. Is post production bad? The argument will run and run that’s for sure. It’s between the people who think that to be a good photographer you have to get it all exactly right in your camera, and in the extreme, those people who think that you have a free reign to process the hell out of RAW file! I guess I sit somewhere in the middle of the debate. I’m not into processing an image to death – to start with I’m not skilled enough! I have a huge respect for people who have this skill and can make an image look fantastic (without being obvious) in post production. I like to get as much right in-camera as I can, but I don’t have a problem doing some editing and manipulation if I feel it improves the image, and I will often shoot with the post-production ideas already in my mind. When you shoot video it is generally clear to people/clients that you have to spend time away from the location editing the video, but when shooting stills a lot of clients think that you press the button and then just send them the image. It isn’t apparent that editing stills is as much a part of modern photography as actually being on site taking the images. It is a process than can take as much of your time (sometimes more) than you do actually shooting the images. I used to shoot film, I used to develop film, and I used to do my own prints. Any photographer who shot film and cared about their work didn’t go to a high street print shop to get their prints done! They often didn’t even do it themselves, they used professional printers and developers – much like today’s professional retouchers, these professionals knew what to do to get the best out of an image and would employ ‘post production’ techniques to do that......

Long term user report: the streets of NYC with the Fuji X100s and the Ricoh GR | Mike Kobal

Long term user report: the streets of NYC with the Fuji X100s and the Ricoh GR | Mike Kobal | Photo | Scoop.it
2013 is an exciting year for photographers. The race amongst camera makers continues. Competition is good, it accelerates innovation, keeps pricing somewhat sane and gives us plenty of choices. The last thing we need is a single company monopolizing the market. Without healthy competition, two of my favorite, most amazing cameras probably wouldn’t exist, the Fuji X100s and the Ricoh GR. I love walking the streets of NYC, observing the flow of life, one of my favorite things to do when I am not on assignment. I find it relaxing and it keeps me alert at the same time. I am addicted to it. This addiction got a lot worse or better? since I acquired the Fuji X100s and the Ricoh GR. I have been shooting with these two cameras since the day they were released. I love the X100s and the GR, like for many, these cameras have rekindled my enthusiasm for photography just like I remember it from the film days. Every time I reach for either the X100s or the GR I have a smile on my face, like a kid picking up one of his favorite toys. The X100s is a “positive camera” or a “people friendly camera”, it doesn’t scare the one being photographed.....

HELMUT NEWTON: “Skewing Lines: On Pervs, Pearls and Sex Dolls”

HELMUT NEWTON: “Skewing Lines: On Pervs, Pearls and Sex Dolls” | Photo | Scoop.it
The warm afternoon light strokes the ends of her dimly lit legs. They are thin, small, soft, and fitted with a pair of violent heels, obviously too large for her tiny feet. Her naked prepubescent body takes up the greater half of the photograph. She is open to view, exposed—besides those heels, a string of pearls too heavy for her fragile neck to carry, and an umbrella, open, pointing up into the air, ready for use. She is hard and soft, part joyful, part menacing, both coy and direct.

EXHIBITION REVIEW - ROME: Helmut Newton - "White Women / Sleepless Nights / Big Nudes" (2013) - ASX | AMERICAN SUBURB X | Photography & Culture | Photo | Scoop.it
Helmut Newton’s life is frequently described as the apotheosis of fame, craft and glamour. He arrived in Paris for his first major assignments in a white Porsche and died crashing into Chateau Marmont on Sunset Boulevard in 2004 aged 83. His highly publicised show at Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome – a towering and imposing structure designed by Pio Piacentini- aims to showcase the lifelong achievements of the German photographer by highlighting three of his early and most successful publications: White Women, Sleepless Nights and Big Nudes. The exhibition, purposely divided in three sections, follows the chronological timeline of the volumes, presenting over 200 of Newton’s most emblematic and iconic prints.
