Harvard University received a record donation of $350 million for its public health school from the family foundation of real estate developers Gerald and Ronnie Chan of Hong Kong-based Hang Lung Group Ltd.

The gift from the Chan brothers� Morningside Foundation is focused on addressing pandemics, humanitarian crises, failing health systems and social and environmental threats to health, said Julio Frenk, dean of the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston. The school will be renamed the Harvard T.H.

According to two separate reports, the vast majority of high-net-worth households and millionaires are contributing to charities. [...] Samantha Kennedy, Houston-based client adviser and managing director at U.S. Trust, said the vast majority of her clients have incorporated charitable giving into their estate plans. According to the 2014 U.S. Trust Study of High Net Worth Philanthropy, 98.4 percent of high-net-worth households donated to charity in 2013, three percentage points higher than 2011 and the highest rate since the study began in 2006. According to the report, 73 percent have a strategy for charitable giving, and 93 percent give to a targeted set of organizations based on geography or a specific cause or issue. Millionaires typically give 7 percent of their annual income to charity, according to the survey, and 52 percent plan to leave some of their wealth to charity when they pass away. According to the study, 20 percent of millionaires rated their giving approach as highly effective and 41 percent were highly satisfied with the impact they've made. According to the survey, baby boomers and the World War II generation often give to more traditional institutions, such as their alma maters and religious organizations.

Two studies of the philanthropic practices of high-net-worth individuals give charitable organizations hope for the future: Both reports say giving is up and will probably remain so.

The 2014 U.S. Trust Study of High Net Worth Philanthropy concludes, “Giving levels are up and the future looks bright.”

The UBS Investor Watch “Doing Well at Doing Good” comes to a similar conclusion and says, “In spite of the recent economic uncertainty, America's ‘giving gene’ remains intact, and donations of money have actually increased.”

Both reports were released Tuesday.
