Numenta And IBM To Build Biologically Inspired Intelligent Machines.

Numenta And IBM To Build Biologically Inspired Intelligent Machines. | PhD Tools | Scoop.it
When we catch balls, Jeff Hawkins, cofounder of Numenta and author of “On Intelligence,” tells us we aren’t solving differential equations. A robot, on the other hand, does solve differential equations, requiring roughly 3-trillion calculations for a 1s toss (“Kinematically Optimal Catching a Flying Ball with a Hand-Arm-System,” Berthold Bauml, Thomas Wimbock and Gerd Hirzinger, Institute of Robotics and Mechatronics, 2010).

There’s a big difference between intelligence and intelligent behavior Jeff would also have you note. Deep Blue, the IBM computer that beat chess grand master Gary Kasparov back in 1996, and IBM’s Watson, which defeated two Jeopardy! champions back in 2011, displayed intelligent behavior, not intelligence. When you stop feeding these machines their specialized input, their intelligent behavior ceases. On the other hand, when you lay awake in the warm darkness of your bedroom with your eyes closed, your mind continues processing unabated, thinking, musing, possibly stumbling onto some deep aha moment. Part of the reason you keep ticking in the dark is that there are, in fact,pacemaker-like neurons always active in your brain.

This innate lack of intelligence is the problem underlying all of the current machine architectures generating all of the hype in AI. Whether it’s the work of Google’s Professor Geoff Hinton, the work of Professor Fei-Fei Li at the Stanford Vision Lab, or the work of Professor Yann LeCun at Facebook’s AI lab, the output of their machines is intelligent behavior without actually harboring any actual intelligence. The machines and their algorithms are as innately intelligent as the cursor at the end of this sentence.

“On Intelligence” makes the compelling case that a more proper way of building intelligent machines is by copying the salient features of the mammalian neocortex, an auto-associative, predictive memory pattern processing machine. The recent partnership between IBM and Numentatells us that Jeff’s ideas have traction.

The Question Game: A Playful Way To Teach Critical Thinking

The Question Game: A Playful Way To Teach Critical Thinking | PhD Tools | Scoop.it

"Big idea: Teaching kids to ask smart questions on their own

A four-year-old asks on average about 400 questions per day, and an adult hardly asks any. Our school system is structured around rewards for regurgitating the right answer, and not asking smart questions – in fact, it discourages asking questions. With the result that as we grow older, we stop asking questions. Yet asking good questions is essential to find and develop solutions, and an important skill in innovation, strategy, and leadership. So why do we stop asking questions – and more importantly, why don’t we train each other, and our future leaders, to ask the right questions starting from early on?"

Anything that gives students a chance to ask their own questions is a good idea in my opinion.  When the questions invoke critical thinking, it's a double bonus!  Also, writing these questions on any pre-made box would work.  No need to be crafty with scissors and tape.

Some Great Tools for Transcribing Audio and Video Content ~ EdTech and MLearning

Some Great Tools for Transcribing Audio and Video Content ~ EdTech and MLearning | PhD Tools | Scoop.it
Transcription softwares can be costly and hard to operate. This is particularly the case with those pro tools employed to transcribe lengthy audio and video recordings. Researchers use them to transcribe their data into textual input for analytical purposes. Examples of such tools are provided in at the end of this post.

For teachers and educators looking for simple and easy to use transcription tools, we would suggest the following: automated speech to text apps or audio players designed for transcription works.

How to Get Hesitant Students and Teachers to Use Moodle

How to Get Hesitant Students and Teachers to Use Moodle | PhD Tools | Scoop.it
Moodle allows teachers and students to use a streamlined, simple and efficient interface. It is a platform that allows education to move online. With the influx of students preferring to work online, and the addition of online apps such as Turnitin and Google Docs, Moodle is a valuable program to use.

However, teachers and students alike are often still reluctant to use it. This can be due to a host of reasons – whether they are intimidated by the software, refuse to use technology no matter how useful it may be, or simply because it is an unfamiliar program that comes with a learning curve.

Despite these reasons, Moodle is a relatively easy program to use and familiarize yourself with. It is a program for those who are unfamiliar with technology or have a difficult time grasping new concepts. The learning curve is not steep and can be learned quickly. Once users become comfortable with the interface, Moodle proves to be a worthwhile program. If you are not convinced, here are some reasons below to persuade you to consider using the program.

Moodle plugins: OpenMeetings

Moodle plugins: OpenMeetings | PhD Tools | Scoop.it

OpenMeetings is a free browser-based software that allows you to set up instantly a conference in the Web. You can use your microphone and/or webcam, share documents on a white board, share your screen or record meetings. It is available as hosted service or you download and install a package on your server with no limitations in usage or users.

With this integration and the current OpenMeetings version 3.0.+ you can create different types of rooms and separated users in OpenMeetings with the access-level "SOAP-Only". The "SOAP-Only" user can do exactly what is needed to run the integration but nothing more. This does result in no need for any OpenMeetings Admin-User in the Moodle Module config! So you can better protect your OpenMeetings server from non-authorized access via the SOAP Gateway and no need to share confidential account data. "SOAP-Only" users can not login to OpenMeetings administration or manipulate user accounts via SOAP. OpenMeetings also supports access via https and ldap-/Active Directory-Integration.

The latest OpenMeetings Moodle Module is for Moodle 2.7.x/2.8.x and is compatible with the OpenMeetings 3.0.x branch. It is recommended to update to the latest version of OpenMeetings.
