For the report, Experian made predictions about the top data breach trends and issues across industries in 2016.
In a section of the report addressing health care, the researchers wrote, "We predict that health care companies will remain one of the most targeted sectors by attackers, driven by the high value compromised data can command on the black market, along with the continued digitization and sharing of medical records" (Experian 2016 Data Breach Industry Forecast, December 2015).
About 90% of health care organizations have experienced a data breach within the last two years, according to the report.
The report predicted that cybercriminals will most likely focus their attacks on large insurers and health systems. However, it noted that "smaller incidents caused by employee negligence will also continue to compromise millions of records each year."
