Google doubling down on Cardboard with initiatives meant to expand VR to as many phones as possible. First of these is a new software kit that will make it easier for developers to build Cardboard apps for iPhones. The company also redesigned the cardboard hardware so that it is easier to fold and can now accommodate any smartphone, including popular, larger-screen, so-called phablets.  -  The Cardboard update is a modest offering compared with the product splashes of previous Google conferences, which have included a spherical entertainment system that was never released and Google Glass, the much hyped and now discontinued computerized eyewear that caused significant privacy concerns.  -  With Cardboard, Google’s virtual reality is decidedly low cost and low frills, but, as in other Google efforts, like the free Android software that is the most widely used operating system in the world, it seems meant more to amass an audience than make money.

VR has the promise to improve every aspect of technology, whether in the medical field, education, or in gaming, and with all of the emerging developers approaching this tech from their own perspective, virtual reality should be a fully realized technology by the end of 2016.

Though these 10 headsets’ availability vary from out now to pre-order forthcoming, they have proven through tech demos and press releases alike that they are indeed the HMDs to watch for. From big hitters like Oculus Rift, to VR with a cause like Razer OSVR, the best of the best are about to go big.

One of the great things about living near a “destination city” such as Washington DC is that friends and relatives often come to visit. This past Fourth of July week was a perfect example, as my sister-in-law and niece came to visit and to celebrate our country’s birthday in it's capital city.

My niece had also recently just turned 21, and was celebrating her birthday too. One thing that they both wanted to do was to go to a casino. Luckily about an hour or so north was Arundel Mills, an outlet shopping destination and (non-smoking) casino.

I’m much more a student of human behavior than a gambler, so I went to the casino with them mostly to observe the behavior of those that were gambling. I was amazed at the amount of engagement that the people had with their slot machines. They pressed and pressed buttons, watched wheels spin, lights flash, listened to buzzers and bells ring, all in the hopes of maybe winning it big.

The heavy chime of a clock wakes you in a vaguely familiar living room. Scattered keepsakes on tables drop hints at the people who have passed through here, but you can't quite piece them together. The photos hanging on the walls capture smiling faces you don't wholly recognize, even if one of them is yours.


This is the opening scene of Forget-Me-Knot, a new video game that puts its players in the shoes of someone battling Alzheimer's disease and dementia. Alexander Tarvet, a student in Abertay University's Game Design & Production Management program in Dundee, Scotland, aims to use the game to raise awareness of the brain disease, in which a person's memory, thinking and problem-solving skills progressively worsen over time
