Souvent accusés de tous les maux, les jeux vidéo peuvent au contraire en soigner : au Children's National Medical Center à Washington, de jeunes patients atteints de douleurs chroniques inexpliquées trouvent un soulagement en jouant à des jeux vidéo, qui permettent en plus de fournir des données sur leur état de santé.


Comportement violent, inactivité physique, déconnexion de la réalité, asociabilité : on impute aux jeux vidéo bien des maux. Ils peuvent pourtant être d’une aide précieuse dans le cadre d’une thérapie pour soigner des douleurs chroniques, en témoignent ces jeunes patients du Children’s National Medical Center de Washington (USA). Reilly, 15 ans, joue à TubeRunner, un des quatre jeux vidéo sur le thème de l’espace créés par des spécialistes de la douleur et des développeurs de consoles. Les médecins pensent qu’en utilisant des données techniques du jeu et en mesurant l’activité interactive, ils pourront identifier et prévenir les douleurs chroniques du jeune garçon.

Jouer contre les douleurs chroniques

Reilly s’est réveillé un matin avec une douleur aigüe dans la jambe gauche, qui s’est ensuite étendue à d’autres parties de son corps. Il a passé les quatre mois suivants à être ausculté par différents médecins, qui n’ont pas pu donner de diagnostic concluant. Il est atteint d’un syndrome de douleurs localisées chroniques, un trouble nerveux qui se caractérise par des douleurs violentes, des changements dermatologiques et osseux pathologiques, une transpiration excessive, une sensibilité extrême au toucher et une inflammation des tissus.

De la Xbox à la luttre contre le cancer

Le chef de ce service spécialisé dans la douleur, le Dr Finkel, explique qu’il utilise la Kinect, une console qui utilise la commande gestuelle et vocale. L’appareil enregistre les mouvements de 24 points différents sur le corps de Reilly en 3D, fournissant ainsi des données sur ses mouvements. Un logiciel les étudie, et les compare avec sa fréquence cardiaque sur des graphiques étudiés en temps réel. Le directeur du Children’s National Medical Center, le Dr Rebstock, indique que les données calculées par Kinect ont encouragé à utiliser l’appareil (d'abord créé pour être utilisé par des gamers sur Xbox) à des fins médicales. Kinect pourrait permettre de lutter contre l’autisme, le cancer ou encore le diabète.
