Pros and Cons of Telemedicine for Today’s Workers

Pros and Cons of Telemedicine for Today’s Workers | 8- TELEMEDECINE & TELEHEALTH by PHARMAGEEK | Scoop.it

Here are 5 of telemedicine’s greatest benefits, according to the experts:

1. Convenience. Penciling in a lunch-hour visit with your physician can prove challenging, especially when a can’t-miss conference call absorbs the bulk of your afternoon. Telemedicine eases this problem. Through video, Web chat, or phone, workers can follow-up on a prescription or diagnosis with a physician they’ve been seeing for years—if that physician indeed provides telehealth services—or with a new doctor in their network, says Kathy Dunmire, vice president of product management for BlueCross BlueShield of Minnesota. The insurance company partners with American Well, a telehealth company that connects physicians to consumers from their offices and homes. When you register, you can check out a new in-network physician’s background, she says. The goal of telehealth is to create an experience that closely mirrors a traditional doctor visit.

2. Less time in the waiting room. We’ve all flipped through the same year-old issue of Us or People while waiting our turn to see our primary care physician or dentist. Telemedicine eliminates this process, according to Dunmire. “[Online care] is really a big plus for our members. It takes a couple of minutes to register and put your health history in,” and then you’re ready to get the healthcare you need, she says.

3. Cost-efficiency. An increasing number of doctors are charging less for a telemedicine consultation than they would for an in-person visit. Telemedicine can also reduce travel expenses, according to Paula Guy, chief executive officer for the Georgia Partnership for Telehealth, an agency that seeks to increase Georgians’ access to healthcare services through technology. This is especially true for those living in rural communities. Rural families who would normally travel hours out of their way to access key health services can do it from the comfort of their couch.

4. Expedited transmission of MRIs or X-rays for a second opinion. Perhaps you’re buried under a business proposal deadline and are unable to get a second opinion about your thyroid condition. E-mailing an MRI or X-ray of the inflamed area to a specialist for a second opinion just might be your saving grace. One of the beauties of telehealth is that it can improve communication between patients and their medical practitioners. In-person visits and postal mail are no longer the only options for receiving and sending medical documents.

5. Privacy assurance. Telemedicine complies with HIPAA laws, which aim to prevent private or secure medical documents from being leaked. “You wouldn’t want to Skype with your physician and talk about all your personal medical history,” says Dunmire. But telemedicine “is safe. It’s private.”

How Mobile Technologies Fuel TeleHealth Advances

How Mobile Technologies Fuel TeleHealth Advances | 8- TELEMEDECINE & TELEHEALTH by PHARMAGEEK | Scoop.it
The sheer power of smaller, cheaper, and faster healthcare is evident in today’s mobile health solutions.

Ever since the first experiments with telemedicine, providers have been taking steps to move healthcare closer to where patients live and work. Now, mobile technology—epitomized by the millions of such apps already downloaded to smartphones, but also appearing in nearly unlimited form factors—is accelerating those steps.

At Boston's Partners HealthCare, a system with 2,700 licensed beds, 45 employees scrutinize these developments at the Center for Connected Health. One early effort to equip cardiac patients with remote monitoring technology resulted in a 50% drop in readmissions, says Joseph Kvedar, MD, founder and director of the center.

"We're all committed to a healthcare delivery model that moves care out of the hospital, out of the office, and directly and continuously into the lives of patients," Kvedar says. "We find that the best technologies to facilitate that vision are monitoring and communications technologies properly applied."

Top 5 health conditions for telemedicine treatment

Top 5 health conditions for telemedicine treatment | 8- TELEMEDECINE & TELEHEALTH by PHARMAGEEK | Scoop.it

The top five health conditions ripe for treatment -- or already being treated -- via telemedicine.

1. Active heart monitoring
For at-risk patients, wireless heart monitoring devices have already proven to reduce hospitalization through early detection of heart failure. In addition, these devices are able to limit the time that physicians spend looking at data that is not pertinent, Brisbourne says, since they only send notifications with information that is outside an acceptable range.

2. Blood pressure
Wireless sensor nodes have become cost-effective, compact and energy efficient, which allows for continuous cycle reporting and electronic dispatch in urgent situations. It is important, however, to distinguish in this category between "critical monitoring" and "convenience monitoring." The former is able to account for stress, eating habits and other external triggers more completely and pinpoint life-or-death issues. The latter includes iPhone Apps for the merely curious consumer.

3. Diabetes
Wireless glucose monitoring devices can send alerts to patients and doctors when values move outside an acceptable range. These devices can also monitor for dietary intake that would affect a patient's course of action.

4. Prescription compliance
Patient health risks -- and the risk of hospital admission -- are greatly reduced by eliminating medication misses. But there's also a need to ensure that people take entire drug courses and eliminate the potential for re-prescribing, says Brisbourne. Billions of dollars each year reach their expiration date in patients' medicine cabinets, he notes. Additional intangible benefits include fewer provider phone calls, and even shorter wait times in provider offices by eliminating visits from improper prescription utilization.

5. Sleep apnea
Telemedicine devices for sleep apnea can handle both investigatory and direct treatment. The two-way nature of the devices can report on sleep patterns, body position and breathing to refine research and treatment course for any given patient. There's a direct cost saving here as well, says Brisbourne, as the devices directly eliminate the need for expensive polysomnography exams and limit the need for overnight hospital stays, on an ongoing basis.

La télémédecine à l'hôpital

La télémédecine à l'hôpital | 8- TELEMEDECINE & TELEHEALTH by PHARMAGEEK | Scoop.it

Telemedicine to Lower Cost for 5 Health Issues

Telemedicine to Lower Cost for 5 Health Issues | 8- TELEMEDECINE & TELEHEALTH by PHARMAGEEK | Scoop.it

Telemedicine is the advanced technology that will allow patients to monitor their own health at home. These devices can upload patient test outcomes to an online database, where their physicians can keep an eye out for dangerous patterns in the patient’s health. The prevalence of telemedicine is slowly increasing and becoming more advanced, leaving the impetus behind improved health with the patient.

Healthcare IT News (2012) recently announced the five areas of healthcare that telemedicine will likely improve greatly over the coming years: (1) active heart monitoring, (2) blood pressure, (3) diabetes, (4) prescription compliance, and (5) sleep apnea. Physicians and product developers hope that telemedicine will be able to improve patient health by increasing continual monitoring and therefore catching problems before symptoms show up. Telemedicine is also expected to decrease healthcare costs in these areas by eliminating unnecessary doctor visits and preventing bigger health problems earlier.
