This online source offered me information on facts of what were the positives and the negatives of being a pharmacist. I found out that the pros are a good salary, great job security, safe working envrionment, and it is not as stressful as other medical jobs such as doctors or surgeons. Some cons include standing on your feet for long hours at a time, having to complete several years of additional school, and having to do repetitive work every day. A lot of these cons do not bother me, as I like doing repetitive things that this job requires because I like to follow a system when working. There is major upside to this career and I am willing to take more time to study in school in order to become a pharmacist.

My Thoughts:

After reading this article by Andrea Santiago, I now know that there are many different types of jobs that involve pharmacy. At first I thought that there was only one type of pharmacist, but I now know that there are a lot of different possible job I can have in the world of pharmacy. The two main types of pharmacy jobs are retail and clinical pharmacists. A retail pharmacist is one who works at a grocery store or drug store. A clinical pharmacist dispenses drugs at a hospital as a part of a medical care team. There are also jobs available in the business and marketing end of pharmacy. This shows me that if I don't become an actual pharmacist, I can still be involved in the pharmacy industry in some way.

Pharmacists : Occupational Outlook Handbook : U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics

Pharmacists : Occupational Outlook Handbook : U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics | Pharmacist | Scoop.it

Pharmacists dispense prescription medications to patients and offer advice on their safe use.

I was searching beyond the UW pharmacy school because I realized I didn't really know what it took to become a pharmacist. The Online Occupational Handbook helped me really understand that for most programs I am going to have to get degree first and then go on to become a pharmacist. I liked that I also could see similar fields along with how much I could anticipate making.

In class we have been discussing financial aid and student loans. I need to budget out the cost of not only a four year degree but then pharmacy school. Looking at the average income can help me think about how long it would take to pay that back. I am wondering if I could work with the four year degree first and then go back to school or if it is better to go straight through. I want to talk to someone in the field first.
