Clear.MD A new video platform for medical information.

Clear.MD A new video platform for medical information. | Pharma digital | Scoop.it

Dr. Ronan Kavanagh (@ronantkavanagh) writes:

'Keeping my patients well educated and uptodate with everything they need to know about their illness is a very important part of my practice. Knowledgeable patients do better on treatment, are less anxious about their illness, and tend to he happier overall in my experience. Having content, well informed patients in my practice also means I tend to get home a bit earlier in the evening. That’s good too.

I have been lucky enough to be working with a new healthcare company called Clear.md over the last few months who have provided a platform which allows health care professionals to record and display medical educational video content online. I believe that this platform will be the new Youtube for reliable, Doctor provided healthcare information.

33 video’s to date (with many more to come) all of which address specific questions about rheumatic disease which are asked of me every day of the week. They’re mercifully short (most less than 60 seconds) and I hope that you find them helpful.

You will notice that there is a ‘Vidscription’ section (ie a Video ‘prescription’) on the site where I have grouped videos on a certain topic together. For example, where I start a patient on a drug like Methotrexate, I will be able to email them a link to a collection of videos all about the drug.

In time, I hope to put all of the information I provide to patients online on this platform.

The banner ad is dead: long live social search

The banner ad is dead: long live social search | Pharma digital | Scoop.it

Consumers are relying less on stand-alone search to find the information they need and more on search within social environments.

When it comes to connecting with communities of interest in social environments, banner ads have failed.

Chalk it up to increasing banner ad blindness or the space constraints of mobile — either way, the solution is not to pour more money into ads people aren’t seeing, but rather, to make sure your messages are delivered via social.

When smartphone apps play doctor

When smartphone apps play doctor | Pharma digital | Scoop.it

Health app developers initially focused on consumer diet and exercise, said Brian Dolan, editor of Boston-based MobiHealthNews.com, which tracks advances in mobile health and medical technology. "Now we're seeing them look into more serious health conditions where there's a real need for innovation."

Glen Stream, president of the American Academy of Family Physicians, sees an "explosion" of mobile medical apps, and gives the trend a qualified endorsement. He's an "iPhone guy" who uses about 20 medical or health-oriented apps.
"People want to be empowered to take care of their health," Stream said. The devices and apps, Stream said, "certainly are not going to replace the need for a collaborative relationship with a family physician."

Physicians 'ideally positioned to drive the revolution in digital health'

Physicians 'ideally positioned to drive the revolution in digital health' | Pharma digital | Scoop.it

David Shaywitz (@DShaywitz) writes:

'Physicians are ideally positioned to drive the revolution in digital health – a revolution that to my eyes seems largely driven by the technologists, who tend to provide tools in search of application, rather than by doctors, who routinely encounter problems but don’t always have the experience or ability to see these as important opportunities, problems that might be solvable (easily, in some cases) with the right technology.

Eric von Hippel of MIT has highlighted the importance of “field discovery” – practitioners working on problems they encounter — in driving medical innovation.

In contrast, many medical products companies are largely solution machines in search of a problem, and might really benefit, at the earliest stages of project selection, from input from clinicians on the front line, as the gap between illness as understood by R&D groups and as experienced by patients and the physicians who treat them can be both profound and alarming.'

Shaywitz offers 'four reasons why the idea of an inquisitive clinician pursuing academic medicine by starting companies within the university seems smart and appealing:'

1. Evolving health information technology (HIT) creates opportunities as well as challenges

2. Field discovery is essential for medical innovation

3. They're in the right place at the right time

4. They may be able to forge a 'translational medicine innovator' track on the basis of the compelling nature of their proposition

The Wikipedia Bureaucracy

The Wikipedia Bureaucracy | Pharma digital | Scoop.it

This past week, the media has worked itself into a frenzy over Wikipedia’s future. On Monday, Robinson Meyer wrote an article for The Atlantic warning about the alarming decline in the number of administrators and participating users on Wikipedia. Gizmodo soon followed suit with a pessimistically headlined post, “Wikipedia is running out of editors and admins” and the story has since spread to BBC and MSNBC.
