A Dark Brown Dog is a short story by Stephen Crane featured in American Literature's collection of Twenty Great American Short Stories. On the surface, the story line starts when a little brown dog is met, begrudgingly befriended, and then taken home as a little boy's companion. The story works remarkably well on that level and in the modern era it makes an important statement. But taken in historical context, when it was written in 1893, it is symbolic criticism of the Jim Crow South. An absolutely brilliant and worthwhile story to read and consider in both modern times and in its historical context.
