International Plant Sentinel Network (early warning of new and emerging pests) is recruiting its coordinator | Pest Alerts | Scoop.it
Anne-Sophie Roy's insight:

The International Plant Sentinel Network (part of EUPHRESCO II) is designed to enhance activities that provide early warning of new and emerging plant pests and diseases.  This project will be led by the Food and Environment Research Agency with funding secured for three years from 2013-16.  The project will involve extensive collaboration amongst partners in Europe as well as forging links with other organizations involved in plant sentinel networks around the world.  To date the following partners have secured funding for involvement (Food and Environment Research Agency, Botanic Gardens Conservation International, CABI Biosciences, Forest Research, Julius Kuehn Institut, Germany, Plant Protection Services, Netherlands).

The project is recruiting its coordinator (deadline for application Sunday 4th August midnight): http://www.bgci.org/resources/job/0557/

European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organization (EPPO)

European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organization (EPPO) | Pest Alerts | Scoop.it

'Pest Alerts' is maintained by the Secretariat of the European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organization (EPPO) and its aim is to share information collected on the Internet on new plant pests.

EPPO is an intergovernmental organization created in 1951 which currently has 50 member countries. EPPO is responsible for harmonization and cooperation among the National Plant Protection Organizations (official authorities) of its member countries. EPPO helps its members in their efforts to protect plant health in agriculture, forestry and the uncultivated environment (standard-setting activities and exchange of information).

On its official website, EPPO also provides:

- the EPPO Alert List (early warning on emerging pests which could present a risk for the Euro-Mediterranean region):
www.eppo.int/QUARANTINE/Alert_List/alert_list.htm

- a free database (PQR) on the host plants and geographical distribution of regulated pests:
www.eppo.int/DATABASES/pqr/pqr.htm

- the EPPO Reporting Service (a free monthly newsletter on pests and diseases):
www.eppo.int/PUBLICATIONS/reporting/reporting_service.htm

Since 2008, a new and severe canker disease caused by Neonectria neomacrospora (anamorph Cylindrocarpon cylindroides) has been observed on firs (Abies spp.) in Norway. In 2011, the same disease was also found in Denmark causing damage on fir trees. In 2015, the fungus was detected in Southern Sweden. The Panel on Quarantine Pests for Forestry recommended that N. neomacrospora is added to the EPPO Alert List.

Anne-Sophie Roy's insight:
The  NPPO of the Netherlands intercepted Neodiprion abietis (Hymenoptera: Diprionidae – balsam fir sawfly) on cut branches of Gaultheria imported from the USA. As N. abietis does not occur in the EPPO region and is causing severe defoliation on conifers in parts of North America, it was suggested to add it to the EPPO Alert List

Asian hornet detected in Switzerland

Asian hornet detected in Switzerland | Pest Alerts | Scoop.it

Curvularia malina sp. nov. incites a new disease of warm-season turfgrasses in the southeastern United States

Curvularia malina sp. nov. incites a new disease of warm-season turfgrasses in the southeastern United States | Pest Alerts | Scoop.it
A novel species of Curvularia was identified as a foliar pathogen of Cynodon dactylon (Bermuda grass) and Zoysia matrella (zoysia grass), two important warm-season turf grasses in the southeastern United States. Field symptoms were conspicuous chocolate brown to black spots in turf of both species on golf course putting greens and fairways. Leaves of plants within these spots exhibited prominent, black eyespot lesions from which a darkly pigmented fungus was consistently isolated. The fungus produced gray- to black-olivaceous mycelium within 10 d on potato dextrose agar at 25 C but never produced conidia despite numerous attempts to induce them. Field symptoms were reproduced in inoculated plants of both grasses, and re-isolation of the pathogen from symptomatic tissues confirmed its pathogenicity in fulfillment of Koch's postulates. A phylogenetic analysis was performed using sequence markers of internal nuclear ribosomal transcribed spacer region (ITS), glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GPD1) and translation elongation factor 1-α (TEF1). The concatenated phylogenetic tree showed strong support for a new species within Curvularia that is distinctly divergent from other Curvularia spp. Therefore, the darkly pigmented pathogen of warm-season turfgrasses is described and illustrated as a new species, Curvularia malina.

Anne-Sophie Roy's insight:
Five forests in Northern France will be temporarily closed to the public because of the impacts of Chalara fraxinea (high risk of dead trees/branches fall)
