Audiences are up in all five capital city metro markets: 5% in Sydney, 8% in Brisbane, 15% in Melbourne and 20% in both Adelaide and Perth.

“MOVE was deliberately designed to launch with conservative audience data due to our requirement to only use verified empirical data, some of which was not available at the time of the launch in February 2010,” said John Grono, the Media Federation of Australia (MFA) project representative.

“New data and methodologies now allow us to confidently report improved audience data; audience which was always there but we weren’t able to report on until now”.

Additional research has allowed the system to better measure how people travel between zones and also calculate audiences for buses not servicing a route, which has added to the increased figures.

But Narrative Science is based on more than a decade of research, led by two of the company's founders, Kris Hammond and Larry Birnbaum, co-directors of the Intelligent Information Laboratory at Northwestern University. And the articles produced by Narrative Science are different.
"I thought it was magic," says Roger Lee, a general partner of Battery Ventures, which led a $US6 million investment in the company earlier this year. "It's as if a human wrote it."
Experts in artificial intelligence and language are also impressed, if less enthralled. Oren Etzioni, a computer scientist at the University of Washington, says, "The quality of the narrative produced was quite good," as if written by a human, if not an accomplished wordsmith.

Gowalla Is Reborn As A Beautiful App For Travel And Storytelling - TechCrunch

Gowalla Is Reborn As A Beautiful App For Travel And Storytelling - TechCrunch | Pervasive Entertainment Times | Scoop.it

When you load up Gowalla, the first thing you see is still a main activity feed. Here you’ll find the activity from your friends. Because Gowalla isn’t completely pivoting away from their core location functionality, much of the data and social connections remain intact. But instead of a stream of check-ins, you’ll notice people hanging out together. They’re checking-in, but they’re also taking pictures and talking to one another in clusters that are known as “Stories”.

The main middle tab is now “Guides”. Here you’ll find curated travel guides for various places around the world. For example, if you load up the app in San Francisco, you’ll see the San Francisco guide, as well as the East Bay guide and the Stanford guide. You can quickly scroll through other guides not near you as well. And Gowalla has the ability to make special guides on the fly. For example, they made a TC Disrupt guide for event-goers.

High End Tools for Broadcasters to Publish TV once Distribute Everywhere on Multi Platform Devices at IBC 2011

High End Tools for Broadcasters to Publish TV once Distribute Everywhere on Multi Platform Devices at IBC 2011 | Pervasive Entertainment Times | Scoop.it

Multichannel operators and other content providers around the world are working hard to supply content to display screens of all sizes.

Another important element to nonlinear, on-demand fulfillment is the management of digital usage rights. Several companies at IBC were showing software solutions to address this issue, which gets increasingly tricky to navigate in the new file-based world.
One such company, Pilat Media Global (which develops business management software used by a variety of broadcasters in the U.S. and worldwide), introduced a new software module for its Integrated Broadcast Management System called IBMS OmniCast. This “back-end system” enables media organizations to schedule and manage sophisticated multi-platform, non-linear services such as video on demand (VOD), over-the-top (OTT) TV and catch-up TV.

Disney goes 'transmedia' for iPad generation - London Eve Standard

Disney goes 'transmedia' for iPad generation - London Eve Standard | Pervasive Entertainment Times | Scoop.it

This is not all about digital. Rather it is the live experience that counts.

The theme park has always been a way for Disney to connect with fans, ever since Disneyland opened in Los Angeles in 1955. Yet arguably "live" has become more important in the internet age because it engages in an emotional, 360-degree way that the virtual world cannot match.

Disneyland Paris reinforces the brand and generates big revenues as families splash out on entry passes, accommodation and merchandising.

Euro Disney, the listed company that runs the park and is half-owned by Disney, has annual sales of over ¤1.2billion. Revenues rose 7% in the past quarter, thanks in part to an increase from the UK. Around one in eight visitors are Britons.

Little wonder that rival children's brands have been looking at theme parks this year - albeit on a smaller scale. Viacom opened Nickelodeon Land in Blackpool and Entertainment One has Peppa Pig World in Hampshire. Disney has no UK theme park but sees live events as important - from West End musical The Lion King to a newly revamped Disney store in Oxford Street, which has a daily opening and closing ceremony and digital touch-screens

The final twist is that Haunts does not rely only upon Foursquare. All of the geolocative apps have the same core functionality. This means that one team can use Foursquare, while another team uses Gowalla, and yet another Brightkite. Each team will weave parallel yet diverging stories across the same series of spaces. Each Haunt hosts a number of haunts. The narrative and geographic path of a single team’s story should alone be engaging enough to follow, but even more promising is a kind of cross-pollination between haunts, in which each team builds upon one or two shared narrative events, exquisite corpse style. Imagine the same traumatic kernel, being told again and again, from different points of views. Different narrative and geographic points of views. Eventually these multiple paths could be aggregated onto a master narrative—or more likely, a master database—so that Haunts could be seen (if not experienced) in its totality.

Archive: 'Stop Interchanging - Gamification. Advergaming. Transmedia, In-game Ads & Game Design' Games Brief | Pervasive Entertainment Times | Scoop.it

Transmedia has come to mean “adding a piece of interactive entertainment around the edges of a non-interactive product, like a movie or book”. It often means a website, or an app, or an ARG (an alternate reality game).

The problem is that these are often ill-conceived.

I’m going to remind you of the great strength of games: they build engagement and excitement over time, and they monetise well. They are not brilliant for building awareness and excitement fast.

Don’t get me wrong. Games can do this. Movie companies in particular often commission games to support the theatrical release of a blockbuster. Their objectives are usually pretty limited: to get bums on seats in a cinema within a four week period.

In Beckinfield (community online story) - The search for Rose Banter continues! She's been taken up! Oh no there she is over there on Twitter @rosebanter | Pervasive Entertainment Times | Scoop.it

The search for Rose Banter continues. The teenage lifeguard, dubbed “The Beckinfield Rose” by local press, went missing more than a week ago. Though tension and concerns continue to rise, residents refuse to give up hope that she will be found alive and well. The search has extended into the surrounding towns of Dustrock and Shallow Creek.

A candlelight vigil for the return of Rose Banter will be held at Hidden Star Lake on the evening of Thursday, Sept. 15. All of Beckinfield is expected to turn out for it. (Note: The vigil was initially scheduled for Friday evening, but was moved due to a conflict with the first Beagles game of the season.)

Spoiler: This will be a quiet, peaceful gathering of friends, family, and well-wishers. Rose’s father, the chief of the Beckinfield Police Department, will make a short plea for her safe return. Then precisely at 7:15 PM PST, a commotion will move through the crowd as word spreads that a mysterious sentence has just appeared on Rose’s Twitter account.

Creating Customer Value on the Digital Frontier - B. Joseph Pine II & Kim C. Korn - Harvard Business Review | Pervasive Entertainment Times | Scoop.it

While digital technology has been around for quite a while now, those businesses that fully embrace this dual nature of time, space, and matter — the ability to create value through actual and/or autonomous events, in real and/or virtual places, with material and/or digital substances — open up new opportunities never before envisioned, engendered, or encountered. With the full power of digital technology at our disposal, the possibilities are now endless, for they are limited only by our imagination. And of that there is no end.

But risk comes with experimentation, he said. "It's a different reaction than if I had sent my print creative to a magazine and it wasn't published," Mr. DeBolt said. "There would be hell to pay for that."

"With this particular situation my attitude is these technologies are new and still evolving so I'm going to be a patient man and go with it," he added. "As soon as we were informed, and we were informed immediately, all the different people that touched this -- at Apple, our media agency, internally -- were ferociously trying to solve the problem."

If digital media sometimes bring glitches, it at least allows for fixes as well, Mr. Mittman said. "Never-before-done ideas come with never-been-done before problems," he said. "The beauty of digital technologies is that they allow us to amend them and make changes along the way. If we make a mistake on the printed page, it's static."

TransChannel, Single Device Storytelling? Some of it makes sense :) AROUND THE TRANSMEDIA WORLD iv Laurent Guerin | Pervasive Entertainment Times | Scoop.it

However multichannel devices are fabulous. It’s great to see probably one of the best transmedia tools appearing which is the locative tablet, which means that content can move with the user now -you can carry now your gaming / filming / tv / music worlds- and then layer them all over the real world all trough one device. It is a great benefit to transmedia storytellers. The word transmedia almost becomes slightly irrelevant because nowadays we're seeing a kind of "convergence" to some very personal devices, it's great for storytelling. We are starting to see trans-channel storytelling moving between the services and the channels on single devices potentially.
