I attended the Producer’s Guild of America’s Crossover Producing Panel in early April, the panelists were all producers who had taken their experience in film or television and found their way into new disciplines.

Quote "Thinking about producing from the perspective of more generic business descriptions, one can examine a bit more of what it takes to create a project in the media space, regardless of the platform or platforms it exists on. Each new storyworld is a new business proposition, and while to succeed your story must be strong and well elocuted, without a producer’s business experience or tenacious spirit, it may never make it off the drawing board.

Florida-based Magic Leap says its system operates by shining images on your retinas, creating an augmented reality which combines fictional characters with the real world.

Mr Abovitz recently said: 'We have the term 'cinematic reality' because we are disassociated with those things.

'When you see this, you will see that this is computing for the next 30 or 40 years.

'To go farther and deeper than we're going, you would be changing what it means to be human.'

The soon-to-be defunct Google Glass, already lets users see augmented reality. 

Using a particular app for example, runners can wear the glasses to see monsters chasing them.

The Magic Leap patent shows how its headset could be used in a similar way by cyclists, for example.

 

 

 

Google Glass also superimposes information on the periphery of a wearer's vision.

Facebook spent $2 billion buying Oculus last year, which makes a virtual reality headset, mostly aimed at gamers.

Unlike Magic Leap's future device, it blocks out the real world around the user.

It’s not hard to get lost in the experience, forgetting your real-world surroundings and moving your head about with abandon. From the outside, the experience looks strange, but bystanders to our tests were quickly silenced and converted with a brief trial."

Transactional Data. The use of Big Data in marketing started out as pure and simple “transactional data.” Marketers began recording and classifying basic information about consumers and purchases: what they bought, where they were, when they bought it, what they paid, etc. While this data is informative for working through product placement problems, price points, etc., it didn’t provide any way for the company to go out and get more customers like the ones they already had.Demographic Data. With “demographic data,” marketers were able to collect basic information about the type of customers they had. But just because one Latina mother with three children and an $80,000 household income bought your product, doesn’t necessarily mean another demographically-identical customer will.Psychographics / Lifestyle Data. People are much more complex than the demographic silos marketers would like to place them in. Interests, hobbies, social habits, political views, religious beliefs, and a host of subtle, internal preferences make “psychographics” a must-have for marketers. Perhaps one of the most influential effects of Facebook is the mainstreaming of psychographics. With social media, marketers can target users with very specific likes and interests.Attitudinal Data. This all goes one step further with “Attitudinal Data,” which determines how users think or feel about your industry, brand, or product. Customer satisfaction reports and online reviews provide opportunities to get your feet wet with some basic attitudinal data.Behavioral Data (Sociographics). Big Data’s current culmination (for marketers) is in “sociographics.” Sociographics is the analysis of social media and online behavior across the entire web. On a basic level, this may include retargeting with AdRoll; on a more complex level, it may include building a comprehensive picture of where your customers and potential customers spend their time online, how they interact with friends and brands, what their attitude is like, etc.

As with many transmedial efforts, the attempt to use multimedia -- and this is a very good example -- can seem to focus on devolving a story line into something situational.

If the user/reader/player can be brought into a real-time situation that's part of the story line, then, the theory goes, the entry point is available for that user/reader/player to act on the plot, engage in the narrative, drive something of the action: behold interactivity, the currency of the transmedial realm.

Alice, torn between knuckling down at school and gallivanting around town on her skateboard, tells us that two "baddies" are following her and she ends up being "chased" along the canal. You jump onto her skateboard and skate her away to safety. At which point, we're set up for Episode Six.

Clever, quick, and slickly produced, Inanimate Alice has one more major component going for it: in Pullinger's capable authorial hands, it shows you almost no one. It doesn't even show you Alice. A glimpse here, a glimpse there -- usually as much a stylistic element as something story-related -- and the rest is up to the imagination.

"It makes the story more like reading a book, in a way," Pullinger tells a classroom of students -- after conceding that the initial decision not to show characters was financial: "We didn't have the money to buy photographs of actors" or to commission drawings...But it actually seemed to become a good idea and quite a useful thing for the stories.""

In October 2002, Peter Ho, the permanent secretary of defense for the tiny island city-state of Singapore, paid a visit to the offices of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the U.S. Defense Department's R&D outfit best known for developing the M16 rifle, stealth aircraft technology, and the Internet. Ho didn't want to talk about military hardware. Rather, he had made the daylong plane trip to meet with retired Navy Rear Adm. John Poindexter, one of DARPA's then-senior program directors and a former national security advisor to President Ronald Reagan. Ho had heard that Poindexter was running a novel experiment to harness enormous amounts of electronic information and analyze it for patterns of suspicious activity -- mainly potential terrorist attacks.

Singaporeans' boundless ambition is matched only by their extreme aversion to risk.

Apple appears to have had the same idea as rival Samsung, with a patent granted this week showing the iPhone-maker's interest in a VR headset powered by a phone or portable device.

Unlike the Gear VR, which uses head-tracking and a few physical buttons for user control, Apple's design features a small hand-held remote control that looks similar to an old click-wheel iPod.

Samsung's VR headset was built in collaboration with Facebook-owned Oculus, which popularised the idea of personal VR headsets with early versions of its Rift device.

Unlike the Rift, which requires a wired connection to a PC to work, the Gear VR uses a Galaxy Note 4 smartphone for processing, sensing and display. This allows for cable-free mobile VR use, which was also the goal of Apple's invention.

"A wired connection may be inconvenient and cumbersome for the user in certain situations," the patent says. "Accordingly, there is a need for an improved head-mounted display system, particularly a system that temporarily integrates or merges both mechanically and electronically a head-mounted device with a portable electronic device.""

It’s obvious that the easiest available tranche for lifting that many photos and match ID is from the British airports and ports of entry, like Heathrow, Gatwick, Stanstead, Manchester, Birmingham and Glasgow Airports. If this is the case, then legally, should all travelers in and out of the UK be notified that they will be tracked by British police while inside the country (we sincerely hope that both mainstream media and civil rights advocates will do their jobs and follow-up on that question)."

Things may get confusing in 2015 and already Microsoft has surprised everyone with the announcement of theirHololens headset. This looks to be very similar to the offering of Magic Leap who has been teasing us with rumours of a new holographic technology that promises magical results. What we know so far is that it uses some kind of fibre optic projection directly into your retina; and if that doesn’t turn you rhabdophobic and force you to immediately throw your laptop to the floor in horror then this article has more crazy speculation on what we may get a glimpse of in 2015."

One of the big barriers to widespread use of smart glasses will be the geek or 'weird fashion-less appeal' - these are looking quite Michael Caine albeit with an obvious lens in the middle...we have to follow etiquette and tell those we view they are being profiled after all...
