Personalize Learning Thought Leader Interview: "Learners Making Sense of their Learning"

Personalize Learning Thought Leader Interview: "Learners Making Sense of their Learning" | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it

We had the privilege to interview Darren Cambridge, Director of the Connected Educator on the topic of personalized learning that is a main topic during Connected Educator Month.  Here are some comments that he made about personalizing learning that will give food for thought.

"What is your vision for personalizing learning?

I love the idea of enabling learners to make sense of their learning using more and more varied evidence.

What type of school culture is needed for personalized learning?

I think you need to move toward a school culture that's democratic, caring, inquiry-focused, genuinely social, that enacts participatory leadership. There needs to be a tolerance for messiness and frankness and a willingness to constantly be iterating towards something that works. Building trust is huge, and that takes time and lots of reflection in dialog at all levels."

Thank you Darren for your thoughtful and engaging responses!

Finding Coherence with RtI and Personalized Learning

Finding Coherence with RtI and Personalized Learning | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it

"One of the constant challenges facing educators is to find coherence in the work we are doing. We need to understand how our efforts relate to and support each other in pursuit of student learning.  This task can be difficult, especially in an environment where we are working to transform our education system while also trying to maximize student success in the current system. The relationship between efforts to implement Response to Intervention (RtI) systems and our work to personalize learning offers a good example of this dilemma.

The Personalized Learning Initiative advocates a different organization and approach to learning that is committed to getting learning right the first time. The goal of personalized learning is for students to experience their maximum rate of progress as the level of challenge and complexity in their learning grows so that falling behind is not a concern.

RtI and personalized learning differ from the perspective of the type of educational systems within which they are presumed and designed to exist. For the most part, RtI is designed to serve within the current system where batch processing of learners and learning is part of the design.

An educational system that is designed to support personalized learning is structured differently from the current system. Instruction is designed to wrap around the learner at all times. The framework of a personalized learning approach enables educators to position intervention to occur as soon as the learner needs it."

Personalized Learning - It's All About Learning

Personalized Learning - It's All About Learning | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it

T. Henriksen includes excerpts from an #edchat that took place recently.

The great debate in education in British Columbia seems to be Personalized Learning or Personalized Education. The focus for the chat was based on the following question:

“What do we mean by the personalization of education & is it desirable & achievable today?”

Many of the participants shared their thought and tweets on the meaning of Personalized Learning.  Here are just a few:

"To me, personalized learning is really about choice: choice in topics (or strand of a topic), choice in how students want to learn about a topic, and choice in how students want to demonstrate their learning."

tweet by @stephe1234 “Student engagement increases when goal setting, passion based learning, making a contribution, and ownership are high.”

"Some questions for you….

> What does Personalized (or personal) learning mean to you?

> What is necessary to make this a reality in today’s schools?

> What about the curriculum?"

How Educators are Creating Learner-Centered Learning @ CESA #1

How Educators are Creating Learner-Centered Learning @ CESA #1 | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it

"Recently released by the Alliance for Excellent Education: Culture Shift: Teaching in a Learner-Centered Environment Powered By Digital Learning, a report that advocates a culture shift to a learner-centered classroom environment to prepare students to meet the challenges and demands of a global economy."

In this report talks of what educators are in need of in a learner-centered environment for their own professional learning. Professional learning opportunities for educators vary widely in quantity, type, and quality. Professional development ideally should be “a process of continuous improvement for teachers and principals that transforms practice and increases student achievement.”

If learner-centered learning can be realized then learner-centered professional development needs to take place. The Institute @ CESA #1 points out that they are actually implementing learner-centered professional development for educators NOW!

Speak Up Blog » Mapping a Personalized Learning Journey – K-12 Students and Parents Connect the Dots with Digital Learning

Speak Up Blog » Mapping a Personalized Learning Journey – K-12 Students and Parents Connect the Dots with Digital Learning | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it

Mapping a Personalized Learning Journey – K-12 Students and Parents Connects the Dots with Digital Learning is the first in a two part series to document the key national findings from Speak Up 2011.

This report focuses on how today’s students are personalizing their own learning, and how their parents are supporting this effort. The ways that students are personalizing their learning centers around three student desires including how students seek out resources that are digitally-rich, untethered and socially-based. The key questions being addressed in this report include:

> How are students personalizing their learning?

> How are parents helping students to personalize their learning journey?

> What are the digitally-rich, untethered and socially based learning strategies that facilitate this process?

> How can education stakeholders support students as they seek to personalize their learning?

> What are the gaps between administrators’ views of personalized learning compared to parents’ and students’ views?"

As we move to personalizing learning, consider creating a conversation around these questions.

Personalized Learning – Swedish Style: What We Can Learn!

Personalized Learning – Swedish Style: What We Can Learn! | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it

Chris Kennedy, a BC Superintendent,  reflects and shares his experience in a Swedish school that has personalized learning. Here are the 12 items that he discovers as he walks around the school and talks with teachers and students:

> "Every student has personal goals that are continually monitored

> Every student has personal strategies on how to reach these goals

> Every student has an assigned coach to meet with them every week in a structured, 15-minute discussion – it was noted this was far more than a conversation, but a structured process

> Teachers had multiple roles – all teachers had a base group they met with each morning and afternoon (an advisory-type program), and these students are the ones they meet for “coaching” once a week. In addition teachers are subject experts (e.g. math or French) and also run tutorial centres that require some more general knowledge

> The schedule is flexible. There were group lessons, individual study sessions and teacher-led workshops

> The school offers a variety of learning sessions and formats – some compulsory, some voluntary – from lectures, to labs, to individual sessions

> The curriculum is organized by steps and students’ progress on an individual basis without being tied to a class or grade

> Thematic courses provide contextual understanding, while providing subject standards

> The Learning Portal gives access to learning resources everywhere and anytime – the entire curriculum is online and teachers are continually working to develop and improve materials

> Every student has a log book to keep track of their work (like our agendas) with clear purpose and value – this is connected to the weekly coaching sessions

> There are regular, individual progress tracking review/development discussions

> The student has their own individual study plan"

Thank you Chris for sharing your experience.

Culture Shift: Teaching in a Learner-Centered Environment Powered by Digital Learning

Culture Shift: Teaching in a Learner-Centered Environment Powered by Digital Learning | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it

"The report, Culture Shift: Teaching in a Learner-Centered Environment Powered by Digital Learning, examines the support that educators and schools will require to implement genuine teaching practices that are personalized for each student. Digital learning, the report argues, can be a major strategy for enabling teachers to meet varied students’ needs while also supporting necessary cultural shifts in teaching.

According to the report, learner-centered instruction is personalized, rigorous, and based on college- and career-ready expectations. It is also collaborative, relevant, and flexible, with learning taking place anytime or anywhere. A true shift to a learner-centered environment powered by effective technology requires a strong school culture that embodies, encourages, and focuses on the needs of each student, the report argues. Specifically, Culture Shift maintains that the integration of technology and digital learning, school leadership, and changes in the teaching profession are critical to the transition to this new culture."

Racing to the Top to Personalize Learning

Racing to the Top to Personalize Learning | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it

The new Race to the Top District (RTT-D) competition means that a district must address Absolute Priority 1 and identify one of the Absolute Priorities 2-5 that applies for the LEA or a consortium of LEAs. Absolute Priority 1 focuses on creating personalized learning environments. What does that mean for you as a teacher, a school, or a district?

The four core educational assurance areas in Race to the Top - District competition is to create student-centered learning environment(s) that are designed to:

1. significantly improve teaching and learning through the personalization of strategies, tools, and supports for teachers and students that are aligned with college- and career-ready standards;

2. increase the effectiveness of educators, and expand student access to the most effective educators in order to raise student achievement;

3. decrease the achievement gap across student groups;

4. and increase the rates at which students graduate from high school prepared for college and careers.

The RTT-D competition is for LEAs that have the leadership and vision to move beyond the one-size-fits all models, are concerned about inequity for their diverse student population, and are looking at student-focused approaches. Technology levels the playing field for learners, yet just putting technology in the hands of teachers and learners isn’t enough. To be college- and career-ready and to raise the achievement gap across all groups of learners, learners need to know how they learn best and teachers need to understand how their roles will change.

Contact Us for any questions about personalizing learning and writing a proposal for RTT-D.

The Missing Piece: The Learner - Moving to a Learner-Centered Environment

The Missing Piece: The Learner - Moving to a Learner-Centered Environment | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it

Over the last decade conversations have been about analyzing the data to improve test scores.  The time has come to change the conversation to "The Learner" who has been the missing piece.  Once we understand the learner and how they learn, then transformation of our educational systems can begin.

The learner needs to be part of the daily conversations from now on:  no longer The Missing Piece.

Questions to consider when moving to a learner-centered environment:

> Who are the learners today?
> How do learners learn best?
> How do we meet the needs of the diverse learners in the classroom?
> What is the new role of the teacher?
> How is the role of the learner changing?
> Why is there a culture shift with these new roles?
> How can teachers and learners be partners in lesson design?
> How will teachers prepare to be the guide and partner in learning?
> How will learners express their understanding of what they know?
> What learning environment will be created for these learners?

Create the Environment | Connected Principals | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it
I realized that my role is not to be “the innovative one”, but in actuality, it is to help create the best environments for our school division to allow the brilliance of others to create the innovation. This needs to be an environment and culture that is created for every person from student to superintendent. The more we tap into each other, the better we all are.

I used to think that we needed to make a shift in our classrooms from “teacher focused” to “student focused”. But through my work, and then seeing the photo below, that statement wasn’t quite right. The best environments are learner focused. It is an “all in” idea that learning is something we do with our students, not to them.

Why and How Studio-Based Learning Personalizes Learning

Why and How Studio-Based Learning Personalizes Learning | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it

Pat Donahue, Assistant Professor at SF State University shares the benefits of Studio-Based Learning and why and how SBL personalizes learning. Pat is inspired by a passion to create engaging environments for learning.

"Primary concepts that drive studio-based learning include:

> Students work like apprentices in a common space under the tutelage of a “master".

> Students interact when needed with each other on their designs.

> Students undergo periodic critiques, known as “crits,” of their designs, projects, or products. Crits are for gaining knowledge about your work. They occur student-to-master first and then evolve self-learning crits between peers.

> It is driven by the pragmatic. The idea is to get your hands in your work, get it done, revise it to perfect it, and self-evaluate the results.

> Final work or products are presented publicly."

UDL Guides Personalizing Learning to Meet the Common Core

UDL Guides Personalizing Learning to Meet the Common Core | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is used to design curriculum, lessons and instruction based on the diversity of the learners in their classroom.

How can UDL guide personalize learning to meet the Common Core?

When a teacher understands his/her learners through the UDL lens, he/she creates a flexible learning environment and provides opportunities for learner voice and choice. When lessons are designed using the UDL model, the lesson includes goals, methods, materials, tools, and assessments to reach and support the maximum amount of learners in the classroom.

Learners can use this model to help them understand how they learn best and what learning path they can take to become an independent expert learner, leveraging their natural abilities in the process. This process helps the learner create their personal learning profile that is understood by both teacher and learner.

The importance of this strategy is that both the teacher and the learner understand who the learner is and how they learn best. The learner and the teacher uses the UDL lens to personalize learning. So what does that look like?

An example of an 8th Grade unit on the Civil War serves as an example along with two students who can meet a number of CCSS when they choose and use the tools to support their learning.

Explore our new website, Personalize Learning (www.personalizelearning.com), to learn more about the research, models and educators who are personalizing learning.

Students are accelerating beyond the curriculum designed for their grade levels while students who traditionally have struggled are learning faster and better in response to instruction that is calibrated to meet their needs."
