Here is some exciting news for those education advocates that have worked to change federal policy to include competency-based education. Take a few minutes to comment on Senator Alexander's draft to include new assessment options in the re-authorization of ESEA.


"Senator Alexander’s discussion draft proposes two policy changes that would advance the K-12 competency education movement. He is accepting comments on his discussion draft until February 2, 2015 at fixingNCLB@help.senate.gov.

  • The draft proposes two assessment options. The first would maintain current law by requiring statewide testing annually in grades 3 through 8 and once in high school. The second would establish a state-defined option where states could develop an assessment system that may include any combination of annual statewide summative assessments, grade span assessments, and competency-based performance assessments.
  • The draft proposes to let states use federal funding reserved for the design and implementation of state assessment instruments to build competency-based assessments."

She makes reference to two resources, Where Good Ideas Come From and What Do you do with an Idea to help her bring her idea to life. Here are her comments about the process her learners took to develop Query Books.


"As students record their ideas, several things happen. They are giving their ideas a voice, recording them so they will be remembered, and building the habit of paying attention to their ponderings. Each query book would act as a personalized idea "bucket list" of sorts. As they collected and cultivated ideas over time, they would no doubt find that some have more merit than others (a truth that all great minds must accept). Although not every idea is born for greatness, each would help students become more creative thinkers."

The learner uses the UDL lens to share their strengths and challenges in learning, their preferences or needs to access, engage and express as well as their aspirations, talents and interests. At that moment when a learner is able to tell their story about how they learn with their teacher, the "partnership in learning" begins between the teacher and the learner. This opens the door for the teacher to have a conversation with the learner about learning goals, skills and strategies that the learner needs to work on to reduce any barriers and maximize learning. The undeniable outcome in using the UDL lens is that the child has been validated as a learner. This is something that rarely occurs today in anyone's education and will have a positive and profound impact for any learner.

I didn’t know I was doing personalized learning when I first changed the way I taught.  It wasn’t until I wrote about it in a blog post and someone gave me the name and description that it clicked.  It made sense really; I wanted students to have a voice, have choice, and to be re-ignited passionate learners within my classroom, all tenets of the personalized learning philosophy.  For me it was a no brainer; why not teach in a such a way that students would want to be part of the learning?  Why not teach in such a way that students became experts and have a place alongside the teacher?  Yet, wherever I go resistance remains for personalized learning.  In fact, some educators or districts are quite against it, but for many different reasons.  I cannot be alone in seeing this resistance, so I thought a discussion of what those barriers may be and how you can approach a discussion to work around them would be in order.

Carnegie Mellon University and Carlow University in Pittsburgh have been leaders in using the Reggio Emilia model for early childhood. Reggio Emilia sees technology as one tool that actively engages the child. The environment is really a Maker Space giving young learners the tools to learn based on their interests.

Chris Watkins' article, Research Matters: Learning, Performance and Improvement, is about the relationship between learning in schools and performance in schools.  Watkins' research concludes that a focus on learning can enhance performance, where a focus on performance alone can depress performance. With traditional instruction, the climate in the classrooms becomes more performance oriented over years of schooling.

A performance-oriented environment focuses on looking good
rather than learning well.

Joshua Block from SLA in Philadelphia shares the importance of learner voice and how he plans to help learners amplify their voice this year. Here are his suggestions where I have changed "student" to "learner" in this list:
