10 Steps to Encourage Student Voice and Choice | Barbara Bray - Rethinking Learning

To transform a classroom to a personalized learning environment is challenging. First, you need to know what personalized learning means. On February 2nd,  a panel discussion on personalized learning for the Future of Education hosted by Steve Hargadon with Barbara Bray, Kathleen McClaskey, Lisa Nielsen, and Shannon Miller took place. We agreed that it is all about the learner and that student voice and choice is necessary to personalize learning. Personalized learning is all about the learner, starts with the learner, and means the student drives their learning.

Barbara clearly outlines the "Ten Steps to Encourage Student Voice and Choice"

"Ten steps to motivate your students to want to learn. Encourage students to take responsibility for their learning. Give them voice and choice about what they learn."

Version 2-Stages of Personalized Learning Environments | Bray & McClaskey

The Stages of Personalized Learning Environments (PLE) Version One chart needed to be updated. Why? Because of the considerable feedback we received after posting our first version of the chart. Some of the feedback was about consistency and flow across the stages. What worked in what stage?

We definitely want to thank those that critiqued the stages for us and helped us with this version two. Some districts shared with us that our version one was going to be their foundation of their personalized learning initiative. We wanted to refine it so it was clear, consistent, and easily understood. We went to work to update the stages for them and anyone else moving to a personalized learning environment.

Please feel free to download version two and let us know how it supports your transformation to personalizing learning.

Stages of Personalized Learning Environments | Bray & McClaskey

Personalizing learning for all learners means understanding the different stages of personalized learning environments (PLE). Stage One is teacher-centered with learner voice and choice. Stage Two is when teachers co-design learning with the learners. Stage Three is when learners design and drive their own learning.

Personalizing Learning in 2012-The Student & Parent Point of View

Jackie Gerstein shares in her blog "Speak Up Report:  Mapping a Personalized Journey".  The report released by Project Tomorrow supports how and why technology can support personalized learning.

"What follows is an Infographic and key findings of Mapping a Personalized Learning Journey – K-12 Students and Parents Connects the Dots with Digital Learning"

"Students are already seeking out ways to personalize their learning. Looking to address what they perceive as deficiencies in classroom experiences, students are turning to online classes to study topics that pique their intellectual curiosity, to message and discussion boards to explore new ideas about their world, or to online collaboration tools to share their expertise with other students they don’t even know. Their experience with seeking out their own personalized learning experiences has changed their overall expectations for their education, and not just for the use of technology.

"These students have an intrinsic understanding that like so many other aspects of their lives, personalization is the key to their own greater engagement in the learning process. So, even while students have turned to personalized learning on their own time, in their own way, why is it that this revolution of technology that has enabled personalization not also penetrated our classrooms? Why is it that we are for the most part still educating our children with a model that perpetuates the fallacy of one size fits all? Why is it that technology has transformed the way we shop, bank and interact with each other and not yet had the same impact on teaching and learning, at least as education stands today?"

Motivation, Engagement, and Student Voice | Students at the Center

"What motivates students to engage in learning and achieve academic success? The authors synthesize research on achievement motivation, school engagement, and student voice, concluding that the more educators use student-centered approaches to reinforce student agency, the more motivation and engagement are likely to rise."

UDL and Transforming Learning: Stephen Petrucci

I had the honor of interviewing Stephen Petrucci who is the first British Columbia administrator that discussed UDL in relation to a personalized learning environment.  Stephen shares his vision of personalized learning and what steps have been taken in his schools where he is the Director of Instruction in School District 60 - Fort St. John, BC.

"What is your vision of personalizing learning?

Personalizing learning is education through the eyes and brain of the individual learner. This entails building a relationship with the learner and creating a profile that reveals personal interests, strengths and prior learning, as well as academic needs. It involves determining and getting a learner’s input on how they learn best, using a framework such as UDL to collaboratively design instruction and finally, employing the vehicles of technology and the arts to drive that personal learning forward."

Thank you Stephen, a BC thought leader, for your vision and insight into persoanlized learning!

Kevin McLaughlin Shares PJs: Personal Journeys | Bray

Kevin McLaughlin is a primary teacher in the Old Mill Primary School in the UK who shares how he transformed his classroom to a personalized learning environment.

In a recent interview, Kevin shared his vision of personalized learning, the steps he took to create this new learning environment and how he redesigned his classroom based on how learners interact with each other.  Read this inspirational interview and discover why “It’s never been a better time to be a teacher/learner.”

Here is a small excerpt on Kevin's vision:

"What is your vision of personalizing learning?

I have envisaged personalised learning in my classroom as one that involves every learner in the development of their learning journey, that includes their own learning themes as well as those that the curriculum requires of them and allows them the opportunity to explore this learning in any way they see fit to achieve it."

Personalized Learning for All Students | Institute @ CESA #1

Jean Garrity, Assistant Director at The Institute @CESA #1, writes a moving article that personalized learning is for all students.  She points out that for struggling students, school is not always a welcoming place.  So how can personalize learning change that?

"Struggling students require significant amounts of time and attention, and relying on a century-old approach to education will not help these students move forward and find success. When learning is personalized, teachers use assessment data to identify the starting point in the curriculum where students can be successful, creating learning paths that engage students in their own development. Personalized learning also makes learning relevant by engaging students in real-world problem solving connected to academic content."

She concludes:  "Personalizing learning will promote achievement, engagement and ultimately ownership for all students, and if we give our kids who struggle a chance, they just might surprise us."

Thank you Jean for giving educators some food for thought on personalizing learning!

Students at the Center Project Explores How Students Learn Best

The Students at the Center Project provides a set of reports that lay the foundation to understanding student-centered learning and it's promise for transforming education as we know it.  Here are just a few excerpts from reports that were recently released.

"Student-centered approaches to learning reject the one-size-fits-all instruction that can result from pressure to increase student scores on standardized tests. But they do not lower standards or ignore them. Rather, student-centered practices help teachers connect meaningfully with their students and individualize instruction to each, while also taking advantage of the social aspects of learning—adolescents’ propensities to collaborate with their peers. Capitalizing on the adaptability of the brain, student-centered approaches start from the premise that all students can learn when provided with instruction that truly engages them and adapts to their changing needs. All young people can acquire the skills, knowledge, and expertise needed for 21st-century college and career success. These include and go beyond the Common Core State Standards."

Finding Coherence with RtI and Personalized Learning

One of the constant challenges facing educators is to find coherence in the work we are doing. We need to understand how our efforts relate to and support each other in pursuit of student learning.

Jim Rickabaugh is the Director of Institute @ CESA #1 in Wisconsin. "The relationship between efforts to implement Response to Intervention (RtI) systems and our work to personalize learning offers a good example of this dilemma."

Rickabaugh explains ahow a split screen approach to leadership applies here. "The framework of a personalized learning approach enables educators to position intervention to occur as soon as the learner needs it. As a result, success is designed in from the beginning and learners are less likely to experience the loss of confidence that too often accompanies repeated failure to learn in the current system."

Making Personalized Learning a Reality

Bob Wise, President of the Alliance for Excellent Education, and SLC Board Member introduces the vision of the SLC, Shared Learning Collaborative, and how they plan to support personalized learning.

"Imagine student information from multiple systems and databases being pulled together in one place, so a teacher can track each students’ progress on everything they need to learn, and provide individualized “learning maps” to help guide their personalized learning plans. And after identifying what each student needs to learn, imagine that teacher being able to easily search for just the right lesson

To help make this vision possible, the SLC – a non-profit alliance – is building a set of technology services that will allow states and districts to safely and securely provide teachers with the instructional data and tools they need, to help make personalized learning a reality for all of their students."

Personalized Learning - A Student Perspective

Gillian Locke, a senior at Kettle Moraine School Districts’ KM Global Charter School is a guest blogger this week @ CESA#1. Gillian is in a personalized learning environment at KM Global and spoke eloquently about her experiences when she was one of the panelists at CESA#1 Youth Summit in March.  Here are some of her thoughts about personalized learning:

"Unlike most seniors in high school, I have the freedom to choose what I want to do when I wake up each morning. I am not limited to an 8 hour bell schedule like my peers, nor does my learning stop when I drive off the high school parking lot at 2:30 pm. I don’t have to just do homework in the evenings, and don’t even have to go to classes during the day. Being a part of Kettle Moraine’s new charter school KM Global allows me to direct my learning on my own.

Because I have so many options, and different formats for learning, I have become a lot more in tune with how I learn best."

Creative Educator - Creative Personalized Learning

Don't miss this article on how to be creative when designing a personalized learning enviroment.  Learn how developing Personal Learner Profiles can help each learner understand how they learn best.

Read on...

"When each learner with their teacher understands how they learn best, they become more involved in the learning process. The teacher can design a supportive learning environment that allows for each student to personalize how they access and engage with the content as well as how they demonstrate their understanding.

Personalizing your classroom learning environment by giving students a voice and a choice helps you connect with student interest and passions, motivating them to explore topics and demonstrate understanding in a way that is most relevant to their experience. This makes classroom learning feel more relevant, connecting them to school and connecting school to their passions."

Personalization in Schools | Students at the Center

"Susan Yonezawa, Larry McClure, and Makeba Jones evaluate formal attempts to personalize U.S. secondary education and assess the research on teacher-student relationships and their impact. With a focus on programs for low-income and minority youth, the authors examine school reforms that have incorporated personalization. To improve student achievement and emotional well-being significantly, they conclude, increasing personalization must be the goal of a widespread, sustained organizational effort."

The Personalized High School

CSSR (The Center for Secondary School Redesign) is a renowned high school redesign leader.  The Personalized High School offers a series of first-hand accounts for implementing effective high school reform.

"The authors take an in-depth look at how a diverse array of schools from across the country have crafted programs to create more effective learning experiences for students, with insights on the challenges faced, lessons learned, and what this means for any educator contemplating implementing similar reforms.

The chapters are written by veteran educators who have worked in these innovative schools, and illustrate how the Call to Action principles provide practical examples for developing personalized learning plans, student portfolios and student-led conferences; creating professional learning communities for teachers; and implementing authentic assessments that empower students to demonstrate what they know and are able to do far beyond high-stakes standardized tests."

Personalising Learning Does More Than get Results - How to Begin

Kevin McLaughlin shares how he has personalized learning for every learner and how this experience has surpassed any aspirations he had.  He offers a few pointers on how to begin.

"Personalising Learning is not something you can pick up and start in your own class tomorrow. You need to take into account most if not all of the following.

> It takes a lot of thought and effort

> It takes time to build up a clear picture of every learner in your class and where they are in their own learning

> It takes courage to stand back as a teacher and let the learning happen of its own accord

> It requires a vision and belief that it will work

> It needs careful planning but still allow for change at a moments notice

> It needs the voice of the learner to be listened to to steer the direction of the learning

> It needs you to rethink your classroom layout

> It needs you to rethink your approach to teaching and learning

In the last 8 weeks I have witnessed learners blossoming, growing, developing skills that would have otherwise been kept contained due to an over adherence to the 3-step teaching model (Introduction, Main Activity, Plenary)."

Dave Truss on Inquiry and Personalized Learning | Rethinking Learning - Barbara Bray

Dave Truss, Vice Principal of the Inquiry Hub in Coquiltam, BC, Canada, shares his thoughts about inquiry and personalized learning. Why questions matter!

In an interview with Dave Truss, he describes the Inquiry Hub, what it will offer students in Grades 8-12 and how it will help students understand how they learn best.  Here is just a glimpse of this in-depth interview:

Q. What is The Inquiry Hub:

"The Inquiry Hub was inspired by conversations around our district vision of “Learning Without Boundaries”."

Q. Can you explain the student-driven inquiry approach to learning?

"We are working on the simple premise that if we help students develop meaningful and engaging questions around their own interests, passions and ideas that matter to them, then the learning will be rich and meaningful to our entire learning community. By helping students connect, create and learn together, we will encourage them to look outside of their box and seek a world of potential."

Thank you Dave for the inspiration and commitment you have made to the learners in your school!
