Envision Schools is a small public charter network in the San Francisco Bay Area whose mission is to prepare learner to get into and graduate from college, and to do this, teachers focus on helping learners develop what they call a “deeper learning” skill set. Learners have to master academic content and skills, collaborate effectively, think critically, reflect on how they learn, and understand how they can have an impact on their own success.

All the public institutions of higher education in Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont have joined the New England Secondary School Consortium (newenglandssc.org) and three private institutions to endorse educational approaches that can strengthen student preparation for college, modern careers, and adult life.

Over the past decade, the movement to adopt proficiency-based approaches to teaching, learning, and graduating has gained momentum in New England, and throughout the country, as more educators, parents, business leaders, and elected officials recognize that high educational standards and strong academic preparation are essential to success in today's world.

Putting learners at the center and in charge of their own learning is the focus of this article from Educational Leadership. Maine recently passed legislation requiring that beginning in 2018, high school diplomas must be awarded on the basis of learner proficiency. No longer will "seat time" be a passport to graduation.

Under the new legislation, schools must offer learners multiple pathways and opportunities to demonstrate learning proficiency, including teacher-designed or learner-designed assessments, portfolios, performances, exhibitions, projects, and community service. To reach this goal, all Maine school districts will need to explore personalized learning.

The Stages of Personalized Learning Environments (PLE) needed to be updated again. Why? Because of the considerable feedback we received from participants in our 5 W's of Personalized Learning eCourse about our first and second versions of the chart. Some of the feedback was about consistency and flow across the stages. What worked in what stage? We definitely want to thank those that critiqued the stages for us and helped us with this version three that we hope will be the final version.-

The Ultimate Guide to Using Tags and Hashtags Effectively

The Ultimate Guide to Using Tags and Hashtags Effectively | Personalized Learning | Scoop.it
“Researching the right keywords, expressions, tags and hashtags is more essential than ever. Here's a detailed guide to using them to your advantage.”Ultimately, tags and hashtags have the same purpose – to make you findable on websites loaded with content and to draw people’s attention to whatever it is you want them to see. As I always advocate, however, it’s about relevancy..Both tags and hashtags play their role in the SEO of your website and content, because they are strongly related to the core keywords your website and organization are based on. Keywords with the right tags built upon them will ensure the long-term drive of relevant traffic to your website..Hashtags will keep your content appearing in relevant popular streams..Learn more:- http://globaleducationandsocialmedia.wordpress.com/2014/01/24/updated-twitter-knowledge/

Kathleen McClaskey's curator insight, July 3, 2014 2:57 PM

Personalized learning is built on the idea that each learner is unique and learns in different ways. This is called variability in learning. To support all learners’ unique needs and preferences, learning environments have to be flexible. It takes a process to transform learning environments and change learner and teacher roles.

Kim Flintoff's curator insight, July 3, 2014 9:00 PM

University learners need to be similarly considered.  There is very little ubiquity of prior experience with such diverse intakes - Plan to shift from pedagogy to andragogy to heutagogy.  Student needs shift from early engagement where pedagogy (teacher direction) is the norm, to andragogy where the role of the teacher shifts to facilitating student engagement in the processes of learning, to heutagogy where students define and organise their own learning requirements.

Kathleen McClaskey's curator insight, March 20, 2014 10:32 AM

An expert learner is a learner who is self-directed, self-regulated, motivated and engaged to learn. They have a purpose to learn something they are interested in. They are responsible and own their learning and monitor their progress. However, this doesn't just happen overnight or even all the time. Plus, learners may not be an expert on every concept, strategy or skill. So what we did was create a continuum to develop expert learners that provides the journey learners of all ages go through to build expertise.
