What does Learning Look Like?

What does Learning Look Like? | Personalized and Personalizing Learning | Scoop.it

"A while ago, I created this poster A Tale of Two Classrooms.  It wasn't meant as a statement of Classroom B is best.  It wasn't even meant as a statement of Classroom A is awful.  It was meant as a representation of Classroom A and B."

Nancy White's insight:

Great compare & contrast- I believe "A" emphasis is on teaching, while "B" emphasis is on learning -and sets the stage for personal learning.

Krissy Venosdale revised her Classroom A and Classroom B poster recently to represent "What does Learning Look Like". Some of these Classroom B descriptors indicate a learner-centered environment. What are some other descriptions that you would include?

Here are some of Krissy's thoughts behind Learning:

"Learning is a journey.  Our kids change. The world changes.  We change as teachers.  This morning, I made a revised version of Classroom A versus Classroom B.  As someone pointed out, it’s not a black and white issue. There is so much grey and so much individual choice.  I’m not saying A or B is better for everyone. I’m saying you’ve gotta think and really understand what you want learning to look like in your classroom."

I believe the ultimate power of blended and online learning lies in the potential to transform the education system and enable higher levels of student-centered learning through competency-based approaches.
Nancy White's insight:

I love these questions for education leaders looking to implement blended learning in their school or district:

-How is your program engineered to personalize learning?

-How do you enable student co-design and goal-setting? (key to ownership)

-How do you provide greater transparency? (key to buy-in)

-How does your program transform instructional design to student centered?

-How many forms of evidence are required for a st udent to successfully demonstrate mastery of competencies?

Nancy White's insight:

In my post, I share some ideas and resources to start building a culture of questioning in your classroom.  A student who doesn't question, or worse yet, doesn't know how to ask questions, will likely struggle in a personalized learning environment.  Additionally, questioning can be the pathway to uncover student passions - their "need to knows" and "want to knows." I believe it is an essential piece of personalized learning.

Another intersection between personalized learning and student curators: PLE's - Personalized Learning Environments - are centered around students curating information.

"PLEs consist of a wide range of connections with both digital and nondigital resources. They blur the lines between formal and informal learning. And precisely because they are individualized to the needs and interests of the learner, eachone can look completely different."

Can Technology Help Students Find the “Sweet Spot” for Learning?

Can Technology Help Students Find the “Sweet Spot” for Learning? | Personalized and Personalizing Learning | Scoop.it
"The technological solutions are more difficult to implement than would appear at first blush.
Nancy White's insight:

Great analysis of the problems of "teaching to the middle" and convincing arguement for personalized learning.  However, I agree with Cognitive scientist Daniel Willingham who says "technology is a possible solution to the 'sweet spot' problem...Learning on computers does not neccessarily result in better learning...research shows that emotional connection between a student and a teacher is enormously important when it comes to how much a student learns."

This explains my concerns for those who believe personalized learning is all about adaptive, computer-based systems.  I worry that those important teacher-student relationships will suffer - and that learning will be all about direct instruction with students like sponges - soaking up the information, and then regurgitating it - with little opportunity to transfer that knowledge and understanding to real-world problem solving and creative tasks. I don't believe students will develop the essential critical thinking, creativity, communication, invention, and information literacy skills they need for survival in their future.
