How to Reinvent Project Based Learning to Be More Meaningful

How to Reinvent Project Based Learning to Be More Meaningful | Nire interesak - Me interesa | Scoop.it
Project-based learning continues to be misinterpreted as a single teaching strategy rather than as a set of design principles that allow us to introduce the philosophy of inquiry into education in an intelligent and grounded way. It’s time to not only address the flaws in PBL, but to reinvent it in a way that leads to deeper learning, creative inquiry, and a better fit with a collaborative world in which doing and knowing are one thing.

A coherent approach to inquiry begins with knowing that skills, not content, underlie the inquiry process. Think of projects as the time when students really practice those skills at a high level for public consumption.

Curating is about finding and selecting information in order to learn about a subject. Youngsters can be encouraged to do this  pre-school.  This motivational 21st century skill can be encouraged at home. with educational games toys and and books which stimulates interest.  For example children can learn about  science by interacting with Chemistry Lab; Horrible Science - explosive experiments; Newton's Cradle and Science Museum.  By the time they get to school they are already full of curiosity and ready to increase their knowledge.  Audrey curating for www.homeschoolsource.co.uk

Monica S Mcfeeters's curator insight, March 30, 2014 9:27 AM

By Robin Good,

Here's a short first-hand report highlighting how an 8th grade social studies class teacher (Terri Inloes) has fully leveraged the content curation potential to let her students dive, discover and make sense of topics (in this case social reform movements) that they had not studied before. All by themselves.

Here the steps taken to make this happen:

a) By using the Question Formulation Technique, the teacher prepared pairs of photographs representing each of the reform movements, one picture dating back to the late 19th century, and another representing where that social reform movement stands in today’s society.

b) After checking out all of the photos, students settled on the pair of pictures that most caught their interest.

c) They brainstormed and refined a set of specific questions, and then shared their thinking with the class.

d) With the feedback received they selected the topic which they would curate.

e) At this point students planned their research strategies. By using 5 different graphic organizers from the book Q Tasks, by Carol Koechlin and Sandi Zwaan, students were allowed to choose the one that they thought would help them the most in planning their keyword search strategies.

f) Students were assigned WordPress blogs and provided basic instructions on how to use them to

curate and publish their research work.

g) Discovery and real learning kicked in as students proceeded in collaborative groups to research and document their chosen topic.

You can see some of the outcomes that this assignment produced right here:

Highly recommended. 9/10

Nothing is better than a project that gets community buy-in. Connecting students with an authentic audience is key, to driving engagement and helping students relate what they are learning to the real world. We should try to help students find great opportunities [for real-world problem solving], and then cheerlead them to a great audience

Begoña Iturgaitz's insight:

I confess I am very worried on this issue, as it's key to good quality learning. Focusing just on content in our classes, you may find that your students lack the skills to select and extract good content from different sources. To avoid this, a textbook is a temptation, but many of them tend to be too simple as a relevant source of information and using them students cannot gain researching skills.  Only option to solve this is to focus closely on the process and give clues. Two good examples here for classroom use.

Should we let our students multitask?

Should we let our students multitask? | Nire interesak - Me interesa | Scoop.it

Are you confused about whether multitasking is an asset or a liability? You probably are not alone in this and I have heard it from so many teachers. Some think that being able to do multiple tasks simultaneously is a necessity in this digital age; others view it as a waste of time and attention and a real hindrance to deep learning; a third camp adopts a softer stance claiming that it depends on the tasks you are doing: tasks that require profound thinking and attention are not to be multitasked while other less important tasks can be managed collectively.
