Why Clay Shirky Banned Laptops, Tablets and Phones from His Classroom | Mediashift | PBS | Personal Learning Network | Scoop.it
I teach theory and practice of social media at NYU, and am an advocate and activist for the free culture movement, so I’m a pretty unlikely candidate for Internet censor, but I have just asked the students in my fall seminar to refrain from using laptops, tablets and phones in class.

This is the most convincing argument "against" that I've seen yet.  I would add, though, that Shirky's style is one of collaborative inquiry where participation, discussion are the norm.  " I’m coming to see student focus as a collaborative process. It’s me and them working to create a classroom where the students who want to focus have the best shot at it, in a world increasingly hostile to that goal."

Reading to children has been repeatedly shown to improve their reading, writing and communication skills, logical thinking, concentration and general academic aptitude… as well as inspire a love of reading. The Screen Actors Guild Foundation records well-known actors reading children’s books and makes graphically dynamic videos so that children around the world can be read to with just the click of a Storyline Online video book image.

Agreed some connections don't deliver. Go to plan B and ask a close friend or one who knows you well. Hmm what does this say about virtual friends. Do we need more accountability? F2f or tweet? Maybe need connected tweets. What makes one truly connected?

What does the term "digitally literate" mean? This article gices some prompts about what digital literacy is- and what it isn't.

Kristen McDaniel's curator insight, August 4, 2014 11:15 AM

I really enjoyed this article on "do's" and "don'ts" for empowering students in digital literacy techniques.  I think we forget - this is where our students shine. The article points out that today's undergraduates have NEVER known life without the internet.  How do we use that to help our students learn more?
