This website could be used as whole class or individual investigating. The focus of the site is looking at different materials that are used within art works. This will open students eyes to alternative materials that are not always included in discussion about materials. This interactive resource allows students to investigate different features of the materials such as where they can be found, how they are processed for certain purposes and the different types of each material.

This lesson can be used to introduce the concept of materials within the classroom as it helps develop an understanding of the different properties, limitations and durability of various materials. This lesson plan incorporates different technologies and materials that are familiar to the students including the story 'The Three Little Pigs'. This will allow students to relate to the topic and then build on this prior knowledge to create new understanding and concepts about materials used in everyday objects.

It allows you to virtually test materials for flexibility, strength, transparency and whether it is waterproof. They can they go on to sort different objects according to materials and properties.

Mr Collinson's Grade 1 Science - Materials, Objects and Everyday Structures

This website outlines a unit that has been designed fro a year one class. The unit begins looking at the properties of different materials and the structures that a range objects and materials. It then goes on to look at the different materials and the purposes for each material within objects and investigates why materials were buil in that particular way. The assessment of the unit requires the students to use the knowledge learnt throughout the unit to design a shelter by selecting appropriate materials and structures.

This video demonstrates the various ways that materials can be tested to ensure safety of different products. This video would be useful to use in the classroom when discussing the different properties and purposes of materials in everyday objects. Before viewing this video it would be important for students to understand that different materials have different properties and that these can be tested for appropriatness in different objects. The content in this video should be used to build on this understanding.

 Universal Testing machines are designed and built to conduct tests on materials under tension, compression bending, and transverse and shear loads. The Innovative  UTMs  are used for determining the Tensile, Compression, Shear Strength and elongation of variety of raw materials such as metals, rubber, leather , fabric, plastics, Belts , wires etc.
