Kathleen Johnson's insight:

I think these trends are informative because they illustrate the larger context of personalized learning in curriculum. Here at Seattle Academy we are planning our move next year to a Learning Commons, representing #4 above: Flexible Learning Spaces precisely because we emphasize #6: Inquiry-based PBL in our curriculums.

In the Future Everything Will Learn

In the Future Everything Will Learn | Personal Learning Environments in K-12 Curriculums | Scoop.it
Each year, IBM releases a list of five innovations that it believes have the potential to change the way people work, live, and interact during the next five years. This year, the IBM researchers working on the “5 in 5” listing focus on the notion that in the future, everything will learn.
Kathleen Johnson's insight:

For the most part this Scoop-It has focused on personal learning, but it's important to remember that "everything will learn" as we move into the Internet of Things. That symbiosis with our things and environments will continue to amplify our abilities, as well as create new challenges and avenues for learning.

Personalization vs Differentiation vs Individualization (PDI) Chart new version 3 12/2013 Go to the Toolkit page on Personalize Learning for more information ww
Kathleen Johnson's insight:

This great chart, listed earlier, has been updated. Barbara Bray and crew offer some of the best scaffolding for moving through the gradations of "personalized learning". Do you know the differences between "Personalized", "Differentiated" and "Individualized".  Understanding the finer distinctions between these modes provides deep context for the subject of PLEs. I'm a big fan of their work.

Kathleen Johnson's insight:

PDF download: Carlton College reviews PLEs for inclusion in their programs. This is an excellent overview of the topic =- one of the best I've seen.  And, although this Scoop-It is for K-12, I often find that higher ed innovations eventually trickle down to the secondary level. I am amazed that the idea of PLE has not been adopted more broadly. It seems like such a logical extension of web functionality. The hyperlink fundamentally put content navigation in the hands of the user. But how can we adapt this functionality to our pedagogies. This scoop's writer may have a great point about measuring impacts and outcomes.

Kathleen Johnson's insight:

I like this slidedeck which describes Personal Learning Environments because it highlights the flexibility, personalization, user-control which I still believe is the ultimate learner-centric model. We hear alot about Connected Learning these days, and that is another way to describe the new learning ecologies.  But I still believe PLEs describe a richer picture, and highlights the tech skills and meta skills needed to fully take advantage of today's information ecologies.
