Personal Knowledge and Information Management
44
“Personal Knowledge and Information Management (PKIM) is a collection of processes that a person uses to gather, classify, store, search, retrieve, and share knowledge in his or her daily activities (Grundspenkis 2007) and the way in which these processes support work activities (Wright 2005). It is a response to the idea that knowledge workers increasingly need to be responsible for their own growth and learning. (Smedley 2009) It is a bottom-up approach to knowledge management (KM), as opposed to more traditional, top-down KM. (Pollard 2008)”

What Makes a Great Tweet?

At last count, Twitter had half a billion registered users who together generate some 175 million tweets a day. New accounts are being added at a rate of 11 per second.

Just how valuable are these proliferating 140-character messages?

The Researchers discovered some usefull tips for keeping your followers engaged:  http://bit.ly/HTjvD4 ;

Be clear, not cryptic or insidery.

Don’t overuse hashtags, and don’t retweet one-on-one conversations

"The key is to be aware of one’s audience and how different people’s values may differ,” says Paul André, one of the researchers.

Portals and KM: The Business Value of Stories

"Sitting on a Greek island, I am reminded of how historically, stories have played a key role in transferring knowledge; the epic poems and ancient parables are evidence of this ageless capability. Before text was invented, stories were the main form of knowledge recording and sharing, as the conditions for the preservation of ideas were mnemonic (Havelock, 1976). Stories are still easier to remember than prose and any good speaker uses them to this advantage."

Half an Hour: Knowledge, Learning and Community

The traditional model of knowledge is what we may call propositional or
representative: it consists of a series of signs, expressions, propositions or
representations, which stand in relation to an external reality, or some subset
of it, such that properties of that external reality are reflected in the expression. Knowledge, properly so-called, within such a framework consists of a set of such statements, models or propositions, the ability to manipulate them in order to create explanations, make predictions, or define concepts, and the ability to apply those to the world.

The challenge of pedagogy is that learning is not simply remembering. If all that was needed was to enable a student to recite back a set of facts, pedagogy would be simple; as in archaic schools, we would simply have students recite the fact aloud until they could repeat it back without error.

The community is the place in which we have learning experiences, and the environment through which we communicate with each other about these
experiences. It is at one moment the place where we learn and at another moment
the instantiation, as an artifact, of what we have learned, as a society. It is
at one moment the place where we communicate, and at another moment, an
expression of what we have communicated.

Are You Network Literate?

"Hoffman believes the ability to see and understand networks and use them to your advantage is a critical skill for the 21st century workforce. "It's more than networking. It's more than exchanging business cards and following up after a conference — although that is still important," he says.

Unlike the information age that rose over a decade ago, where content was primary, in today's network age, Hoffman argues that relationships are primary. This interconnected world has replaced the traditional career ladder, requiring new skills and tactics.

Hoffman likens it to a new literacy — a term he chooses with intention — believing it to be a baseline skill that requires training and understanding for people in today's workplace."

Video of the Day: Richard Sennett on the Architecture of Cooperation

Sennett's latest book, "Together" is useful for those interested in multiple points of view regarding cooperation, especially in regard to politics, history, work, and craftsmanship -- Howard

“The theme of the lecture addresses a question: how can we design spaces in the city which encourage strangers to cooperate? To explore this question, I’ll draw on research in the social sciences about cooperation, based on my book, and relate this research to current issues in urban design.”

Peter Senge - Navigating Webs of Interdependence

"Whether you are part of a family, organizational team or business in a supply chain, systems thinking is a valuable approach to understanding the complexity of today's world. Peter Senge, author of The Fifth Discipline, Senior lecturer at MIT and Founder of the Society for Organizational Learning shares his perspectives on leadership and systems thinking with IBM. Senge focuses on the problems that are most difficult to solve and the mental models today's leaders need in order to build a smarter planet. Leaders today need to be able to be prepared reassess their strategies, work across multiple groups to find solutions and have the vision to work through high leverage solutions over time. Working smarter means working in ways that are collective and are based on collective intelligence across cities and supply chains to produce social, ecological and economic well being."

Networked Knowledge and Combinatorial Creativity

Much of Buddhist philosophy centers around this same idea, this balance between what’s being phrased as “intention” and “attention” – our intentional curiosity about knowledge and growth, and our choice of where to focus our awareness, what to pay attention to.

So that, I think, is the role of information curators: They are our curiosity sherpas, who lead us to things we didn’t know we were interested in until we, well, until we are. Until we pay attention to them — because someone whose taste and opinion we trust points us to them, and we integrate them with our existing pool of resources, and they become a part of our networked knowledge and another LEGO piece in our combinatorial creativity.

So if information discovery plays such a central role in how we fuel our creativity and thus in our creative output, then information discovery is a form of creative labor in and of itself.

An absolute must read, from Maria Popova, master curator. Curation is not only a necessity to make sense of the web, it is the path to explore your own creativity :

How we choose to pay attention, and relate to information and each other shapes who we become, shapes our creative destiny

Truly inspiring.

How to Use Social Media To Improve Your Online Reputation

With social media increasingly becoming the go-to for brand awareness, it comes as no surprise that online marketers have shifted their focus to include it in their marketing strategies.

A good social network reputation can go a long way and a bad one has the possibility of tainting your brand forever.
