ABI: UK is "whiplash capital of Europe"

Figures from the Association of British Insurers’ (ABI) evidence to an inquiry launched by the Transport Select Committee will show that 78% of personal injury claims for road traffic accidents in the UK are for whiplash. This compares to 68% in Italy, 61% in Sweden, 35% in the Netherlands, 31% in Spain and 30% in France and Denmark.

The ABI statistics clash, at least in part, with those released by Axa at the end of last year. The insurer said whiplash accounts for 75% of personal injury claims in the UK, whereas whiplash only represents 3% of personal injury claims in France (see Axa press release here: http://newsroom.axa.co.uk/media-releases/2012/response-to-moj-announcement-of-consultation-reducing-the-number-and-cost-of-whiplash-claims/).
