The number of pedestrian fatalities in the U.S. has been climbing in recent years.  No one knows the exact reason and it can be any number of factors such as increased volume of motor vehicle and foot traffic especially in urban areas, distracted driving, distracted walking or other issues.  The bottom line is that the U.S. DOT is stating that they intend to make a concerted effort to understand the problem better and to take measures to decrease the incidents of persons being struck and seriously injured or killed on America's streets.

Jonathan Rosenfeld's curator insight, May 9, 2013 8:22 AM

In response to at least 32 infant deaths caused by “drop-side” cribs, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recently issued stringent new rules for cribs in hotels. As of December 2012, all U.S. hotels and motels must:

  • Remove all drop-side cribs
  • Use cribs with stronger wood, to prevent slat breakage
  • Strengthen mattress supports
  • Use anti-loosening devices to help keep hardware secure

The new regulations also affect childcare centers, and places “of public accommodation.”

The rules come after a general ban of drop-side cribs on June 28.
