Skills for Significant Properties: Debating Pragmatics and Philosophy in an Area of Digital Curation \Grace, S., Anderson, S., & Lee, C.A.

PROCEEDINGS of DigCCurr 2009

Epistemology -

Epistemology is the branch of philosophy concerned with knowledge. Social epistemology, in particular, can help to describe the social dimensions of information. The content of digital objects conveys knowledge as intended by the creator.

Librarians and archivists have not always had subject skills to

verify or warrant the reliability of information conveyed in materials they manage, as opposed to their authenticity. In the digital domain, the respective contexts of the creator and that of the user can be far apart unbound by ties of culture, intellectual

parity, time or space.

Conceptualization -

Digital humanities (or humanities computing) as a discipline provides a methodological focus for studying the outputs of human creativity. It also has an understanding that increasingly computers are used as ‘venues of representation’ rather than just as computational machines. As people become more adept at using technology to create digital forms of representing information and meaning, curators require a similar familiarity with the possibilities of human interaction with such forms. Content modeling, visualization and other forms of conceptualization inform the description and understanding of digital content, and can offer entirely new approaches to the reuse of data.

Explaining Empathy

Two theories that explain phenomen of empathy:

One simulation theory - we "simulate" the emothion in ourselves

The second - theory of mind - the ability of person to understand what another peson is feeling and thinking based on rules for how one sshould think or feel.

The second theory seems to be similar to the informational personal identity approach of Floridi, that each individual is constituted by his or her information.

Personalization in Schools | Students at the Center | Personal Identity role in online learning | Scoop.it

"Susan Yonezawa, Larry McClure, and Makeba Jones evaluate formal attempts to personalize U.S. secondary education and assess the research on teacher-student relationships and their impact. With a focus on programs for low-income and minority youth, the authors examine school reforms that have incorporated personalization. To improve student achievement and emotional well-being significantly, they conclude, increasing personalization must be the goal of a widespread, sustained organizational effort."

Causarano in the article "Identity presence and knowledge building: Joint emergence in online environments?" quotes the words of Bakhtin that “the “self” is only able to know itself (its identity) through its encounter with an “other”, and hence the self can only be constituted through its discursive interaction with the other.”
So we can say that dialog and communication with other people play important role in the identity formation.

E3:OSSI - Personalized Environment

A personalized learning environment is characterized by the ability of students and adults in the school to develop meaningful, sustained connections to one another. In a personalized learning environment, students are treated as individuals; they are given responsibility, spoken to honestly, and treated with dignity and respect. Through these connections teachers get to know students well; they become familiar with students’ learning styles, interests, backgrounds, and goals.

The article presents the advantage of the personalization of the learning environment and presents some strategies to realize a personalized environment

I am in Wisconsin and we are part of CESA 1 NxGL. I team teach with 42 kindergarten kids and we are using personalized learning. We are working through the tangles of being able to personalize with kids who are just learning to read, write and compute. It has always been a struggle to be able to differentiate the difference between true personalized learning vs. differentiation and individualization. You have done a beautiful job of creating a chart that makes this clearer for all stakeholders. This chart will be useful for helping colleagues, administration and parents see the true definition of personalized learning and the potential that it holds.

Hello rwteam in WI,

Thank you for your comments on this chart that Barbara and I created. We would be glad to have you share this with your colleagues in WI and elsewhere. We commend you and your teams in CESA 1 NxGL on the hard work that you are doing to make personalized learning a realty for your students.

When will iBooks become the norm in schools?

When will iBooks become the norm in schools? | Personal Identity role in online learning | Scoop.it

"There has been a push to replace books in the educational arena for some time now. This push hasn’t been in Washington or school board meeting rooms even though they are happening there as well. The big push is happening in the minds of students who are growing increasingly tablet-savvy and almost “spoiled” to the point that paper-products are old, almost archaic."

There is an infographic with this article that looks at the ongoing debate called 'Can Apple Do It Again? How Apple's iBooks will change the way we iLearn."
