A brief History of Social Media (1969-2012) [INFOGRAPHIC] | Personal Branding and Professional networks | Scoop.it

But here’s the thing: the history of social media actually goes back a lot further, and its roots can be found in blogging, Google, AOL, ICQ, the beginnings of the world wide web and, perhaps surprisingly, CompuServe.

7 Infographics: Kickstarter Facts, Figures & Statistics | Personal Branding and Professional networks | Scoop.it

Crowdfunding is on the rise, and Kickstarter is leading the pack. Not only is the trend increasing but, it I’ve noticed that the word “kickstart” has replaced some of the actual terms used when referring to other areas of crowdfunding.

Kickstarter Stats:

  • over 5 million daily visitors
  • 3700 ongoing projects funded
  • $18 Million of funding
  • Multiple projects cross the $1 million threshold
  • Film and Video, Games, Music, and Technology are the largest Categories

In my latest book on business credit it discusses the value of crowd-funding and Indigogo as they will fund anything unlike Kickstarter that specializes in Media oriented endeavors.
Martin (Marty) Smith's comment, September 23, 2013 7:21 AM
Good insight from Iron Dane Richards. Easier to create a sure takeaway from Indigogo too since they will let campaigns increase the house take and walk away with something where Kickstarter is all or nothing. Either the campaign meets its goals or it gets nothing. 42% of the campaigns on Kickstarter meet their goals and most campaigns are funded at $10,000 or below.
Brett.Ashley.Crawford's curator insight, October 28, 2013 9:18 AM

Nonprofits are also looking to crowdfunding -- but it has a dark underbelly as well.

The Social Media Dimensions Blueprint (Infographic)

The Social Media Dimensions Blueprint (Infographic) | Personal Branding and Professional networks | Scoop.it

Like all new technology, social media changes fast.

Just trying to keep your head around all of the different platforms, how to approach them and, of course, how to design for them can be a full time job.

Social media has proven itself as a crucial component of a brand’s marketing mix, but with the many different platforms, it can be very difficult to put forth a consistent brand image online.

The [Ridiculously Exhausitive] Social Media Design Blueprint features all of the major design dimensions for all of the major platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, Google+, LinkedIN, YouTube, Pinterest and the most recent entry, Instagram.

Infographics: The Impact of Social Image Sharing

Infographics: The Impact of Social Image Sharing | Personal Branding and Professional networks | Scoop.it

Most of us are familiar with sharing photos on social networks. It started on Facebook and has exploded with the arrival of Instagram. This infographic aims to explore the impact of a picture-based social network model.

Studies show photo posts on Facebook are the most engaging. In traditional media, the highest percentage of people who look at a newspaper look at the pictures, while a lower percentage actually read the articles. The same holds true for Facebook.
To illustrate the impact of sharing photos on social networks even further, consider that 10% of the pictures ever taken in the world's history were taken in the past year...

Getting More From Infographics

Getting More From Infographics | Personal Branding and Professional networks | Scoop.it
Infographics are on the rise, and well-made, well-placed creations can broaden a brand's reach further than any advertisement.

As a visual communication device, infographics lend themselves to the representation of statistical data or explanation of complex relationships. But that’s not where their value ends. In fact, infographics can communicate just about anything, so long as it’s engaging, relevant and more compelling as an image than as pure text.

Infographics come in a variety of formats, too. Layout, orientation and styling are limited only by the creativity of the designer. We’re even starting to see the rise of “infomotion” — infographics with moving elements and interactivity that further engage the audience.

Via Lauren Moss
Philippe Trebaul's insight:

Half Creepy.  Half Cool!   As long as it is other peaople's company.  Very interesting look at how Twitter employees' social graphs are conected.

Mike Ellsworth's curator insight, March 12, 2013 7:42 AM

Not only can third parties tell a lot about your personality, sexuality, and politics by examinging Facebook Likes (see Researchers predict IQ, age, and more using only Facebook Likes http://sco.lt/522wPh), mapping your Twitter interactions can tell a lot about your social interactions as well.

When localized to the employees of a corporation, as a researcher did with Twitter, you can learn a tremendous amount of information about how the company works and what it's working on.

As former Sun CEO Scott McNealy once said, "You have zero privacy anyway. Get over it."

Social Media Top 10: Retailers [Infographic]

Social Media Top 10: Retailers [Infographic] | Personal Branding and Professional networks | Scoop.it

175 million. On average, that's how many tweets were sent daily in 2012. The total number of tweets sent since the site launched just seven years ago is in the hundreds of billions.

Twitter, of course, is one of many social networking sites that retailers have worked to leverage. Facebook has also been a behavior-changer for many, and companies are still developing their best practices for how best to use these networks to communicate with their customers.

Many retailers are using social media with successful results, as illustrated in this infographic. It's interesting how different types of retailers are using different networks based on their business and audience - for instance, the craft retailer Michael's taking advantage of the visual nature of its product selection on the visually driven Pinterest.
