6 Reasons to Create Great Visual Content Marketing in 2014

6 Reasons to Create Great Visual Content Marketing in 2014 | Personal Branding and Professional networks | Scoop.it

Big Data has been a theme for 2013, and it poses the threatening question of how one can possibly interpret all the data that is available to take in.

As consumers of data, we’re constantly deciding whether to “bookmark” a particularly interesting file, or make an entry in Evernote to come back to read it later. There is so much data being generated every single minute on the Internet that it becomes increasingly time-consuming to make decisions such as: Should I read it now? Should I make a note of it in my Moleskin notepad? Should I email the link to myself?

In short, we spend more time sorting through, curating and organizing data that already exists. In doing so, we create more data about data!

If we are smack in the middle of a digital marketing revolution one of the most important wheels keeping that revolution turning faster and faster is VISUAL marketing. Friends @Scoopit call this "lean content", content that conveys complexity quickly, simply with visualization.

Mobile is another wheel turning the marketing revolution faster and faster AND being accelerated by little screens with their swiping, snipping and spinning of "mobile content".

What is "mobile content"? Some say there is no such thing ad "mobile content". I think there is an opportunity to create "mobile first" websites where content flows evenly, smoothly and in many directions at once.

Content is why the "mobile revolution" is about more than phones. Once we re-imagine content that creates engagement across all platforms (social and owned) we see the need for arresting visuals, great headlines and content snippets.

We are smack in the middle of a revolution. Visual marketing is a monster flywheel driving this revolution faster and faster, better and better. Find ways to make your content leaner and more visual in 2014 to stay up with the game.

The Japanese Tumblr for Personal Sharing and Social Curation is Naver Matome

If you re looking for examples of content curation platforms outside of the popular ones, you may want to give a look to what appears to be the most popular curation platform in Japan: Naver Matome.

From what I gather and can see, this is something very similar to Tumblr, providing an intuitive publishing platform supported by easy-to-use features to easily grab, capture, credit and republish most any kind of content or social stream.

"Naver Matome is a very simple curation platform that launched back in July of 2009. To date it has accumulated over 41 million users and over 1.2 billion page views per month. The platform is now operated by NHN Japan (perhaps best known as the company behind the Line chat app) after a merger with Naver in November of 2011.

On the site, users are able to create pages that bundle images, links, and videos under a topic of their choice, ranging from dieting, to politics, to web services.

There are many reasons behind the platform’s sucess including its friendly user interface, the wide genre of topics curated, compatibility with different social networks (especially Twitter), and strong SEO for both Yahoo and Google with 70% of its traffic coming from the two search engines."

How To Improve Your Content Curation By Finding Better Sources

How To Improve Your Content Curation By Finding Better Sources | Personal Branding and Professional networks | Scoop.it

Excerpted from the original article: "So what is the secret sauce that makes people like Guy Kawasaki, Robert Scoble, or Mari Smith popular while most everyone else remains hidden?

In a word: Sources

In order to do this yourself, remember that you have to go beyond sharing the articles that land in your favorite RSS feeds, or just reposting something from your social media timeline (which honestly has probably been reposted a thousand times before).

To make your social curation easier, and more effective, here are a few things you might want to do:

a) Do a competitor check. It’s important to know what’s already out there

b) What do your competitors post? How or when do they post? What are their usual sources?

c) Study your competitor’s social media behavior meticulously. It’ll take time, yes, but once you’ve established where you stand, you can start looking for the best places to gather curated information without fear of repeating what others have already shared.

d) See what’s out there. Now that you know how your competitors work, you can begin creating your curation strategy, collecting the tools you need and compiling sources you can use to collate content. How many blog posts, videos and news articles are posted about your chosen topic everyday? Does your field have enough sources to sustain you, as far as your plan goes?

e) Is this what your audience really wants? This truly is the most important question you need to answer. You need to see what your audiences actually post online.

f) Create a market study on their digital behavior. You can check for yourself how audiences react towards your competitor’s social media efforts or use social media monitoring software to help you out."

The above is a summary of an excellent curation methodology created by the content curation platform Curata - How to Have an Effective Strategy for Curation

Check out their blog post on crafting the perfect content curation strategy for more details that further expands on the above.

Curating great content is not about passing around what everyone else is, it's about finding sources of great content and sharing that content with your audience. It takes work to find this content and to cultivate the right sources of information. You must understsnd what your audience is hungry for so you can provide content that will get results.

RebelMouse was born to build a social media hub, but it does have strong aggregation, filtering and curation capabilities. SEO-wise it is not a great choice, but also Scoop.it has quite a few limits on this front.

Rebelmouse doesn't offer all of the extras Scoop.it has, from scheduling, to sharing to an extended number of social networks, to integration with newsletter and to the backend dashboard.

Scoop.it has also a better, cleaner and more legible format, that better lends itself to more in-depth reading than just browsing titles, images and tweets.
Stan Smith's comment, November 12, 2013 9:22 AM
While I still use RebelMouse I have disconnected all inbound links because it posts it wacky and I was always having to go back and edit stuff. Now that I post stuff manually with their applet it isn't so bad. I still prefer Scoop.it though.
