Debunking the Myths of Social, Viral and Community

Debunking the Myths of Social, Viral and Community | Personal Branding and Professional networks | Scoop.it
What is a social product? This was the question Sandi MacPherson, founder of Quibb posed to me, over lunch earlier this week.

Level343's curator insight, June 21, 2013 1:39 PM

Communities aren’t products or part of the product. They are amalgamations of people who interact with each other in a certain context and a known set of norms and values. Communities are the lifeblood of social networks. Everything else is just infrastructure - an empty city.

Communities often have very strong culture and values. Reddit encourages a subversive culture. Hacker News champions contentious debate. Tumblr and Instagram fetishize aesthetics. Quibb’s community strives for knowledge.

Fostering communities requires the right chemistry. Mixing the user growth, content moderation, and set of values/norms, to create the substrate for a vibrant city is a constant battle.

In online marketing, it’s easy to fall prey to Shiny Object Syndrome. Someone pops into your favorite marketers forum touting this “latest” marketing tactic that has brought him thousands of conversions, and your first temptation is to jump on board, without research and without a  thought to your marketing goals. Soon, you find yourself dumping time, energy and money into a program that’s accomplishing nothing for you.

Identify community with social media

You’ll want to determine where your target audience lives online so that you know exactly where to look your community. There are certainly any number of starting points for the hunt: Facebook, Google+, or any other social media outlet that’s appropriate for your customers. But just so that we have an example to work with, we're going to use a company called Accent Branding Solutions (who is, of course, just getting started out building their online community), and we’re going to start with Twitter.

Promote content on social media
Social media is obviously a great tool for branding your business. In addition to using the sites for straightforward promotional messages, you can also utilize social media for promoting interesting contentthat might not have a hard sell, but still has something interesting to say about your industry. If your social media accounts share information that’s relevant and compelling, people will follow you, and in turn, more people will become loyal to your business. This is a very slow process, but over time, it works.

The concept isn’t a new one, by any means. From that Starbucks Gold Card you’ve been dreaming of to McDonald’s Monopoly, you’ve been playing into brands’ gamification content marketing for decades. But because of the runaway success of mobile apps that use game thinking to drive engagement after crossing them from more real-world markets such as fast-food, marketers have started to look at gamification again for ways to drive loyalty and to create broad appeal for their apps.

There is such thing as hashtags abuse and you want to avoid it. You know what I mean, those #people #who #hashtag #every #word #in #their #post.  As with all social media, hashtags are effective when you focus on targeting the right people and connecting. It’s always quality over quantity.  Sure you can tap into more traffic if you hashtag every word, but how much of that traffic is actually going to help you?

Estonia opens up its e-voting system in push for transparency, security | GigaOM Tech News | Personal Branding and Professional networks | Scoop.it

For six years, Estonians haven’t had to set foot in a polling place or wait in line to cast their votes for President — instead, they can do it online. And on Thursday, the country’s Electronic Voting Committee released the entire source code of its voting server software on open-source platform GitHub — a move that not only gives Estonians a glimpse into the workings of their e-voting system, but that also gives them a chance to help toughen it up from a security perspective.

The Estonian e-voting process is based on the country’s identity card, which is mandatory and issued when a citizen is 15 years old. The card has a built-in electronic authentication system that allows secure voting online from any computer, and each citizen is allowed to submit and change their vote until Election Day. At the last Parliamentary Election in 2011, one in four people chose to cast their ballot via e-vote. While there isn’t enough data to conclude whether e-voting has raised voter turnout overall in the country, the country’s electoral committee views the process as successful.

The country’s voting source code has always been available for viewing, but old rules required people to sign a confidentiality agreement before getting their hands on it. Completely open-sourcing the code may help reassure citizens that the system is on the level, making them more likely to use it.
