The Australian Curriculum v8.0 Personal and social capability

The Australian Curriculum v8.0 Personal and social capability | Personal and Social Capability | Scoop.it

In the Australian Curriculum, students develop personal and social capability as they learn to understand themselves and others, and manage their relationships, lives, work and learning more effectively. The capability involves students in a range of practices including recognising and regulating emotions, developing empathy for others and understanding relationships, establishing and building positive relationships, making responsible decisions, working effectively in teams, handling challenging situations constructively and developing leadership skills.

Maree Whiteley's insight:

Classroom teachers can get started by checking out the learning continuum...it is organised into four interrelated elements of:

To Help Students Learn, Engage the Emotions

To Help Students Learn, Engage the Emotions | Personal and Social Capability | Scoop.it
“It is literally neurobiologically impossible to think deeply about things that you don’t care about,” says the neuroscientist Mary Helen Immordino-Yang.
Maree Whiteley's insight:
Such important messages here...The emotional connection that can result when teachers make learning personally relevant to students is what differentiates superficial, rote, topical assimilation of material from a superlative education marked by deep mastery and durable learning. While there are no silver bullets in education, emotional engagement and personal relevance is the tool that has the potential to improve the educational experience of every child, in every school.

Teaching Children Philosophy

Teaching Children Philosophy | Personal and Social Capability | Scoop.it
Doing philosophy with children through children's literature.
Maree Whiteley's insight:

Doing philosophy with children is a great way to improve their verbal skills. They learn to listen carefully to other students, to formulate their own opinions in a clear manner, and even to defend their opinions against objections from their peers. Doing philosophy builds a real sense of community in the classroom and, at the same time, it aids in the individual intellectual development of your students. This website will help you do just that using popular children’s picture books.

In an Era of Conflict, Healing the World One Classroom at a Time

In an Era of Conflict, Healing the World One Classroom at a Time | Personal and Social Capability | Scoop.it
Thom Markham offers a set of principles to help educators see beyond immediate reforms to the education system.
Maree Whiteley's insight:
Are we in danger of losing a generation of children to a world that, at the moment, cannot find its way forward without violence, conflict, and despair. It’s not just war and violence that threaten, but a crumbling of the infrastructure of good thinking. Fear is rapidly replacing hope—and that’s not a good formula for growing up whole. The news is particularly poignant as we transition into a new year, when much of the world aims to turn love and good will from slogans into reality. So here’s a question for educators to consider: How do teachers help heal the world in 2015 and beyond?

ACARA: personal and social capability

ACARA: personal and social capability | Personal and Social Capability | Scoop.it

This video is made from a sales team point of view. Obviously schools are not about that but the concept of focussing  on solutions rather than problems is a good way to create team work, collaboration and participation in leadership activities . These are all indicators of the Social Management element of the Personal and Social Capability. The video gives you a clear idea of how you could approach students differently to get better outcomes with these indicators. It is about helping them create a new approach and perspective for themselves. More importantly the video highlights how you need to take the student from how they see themselves through a journey to help them reshape their social management skills.

The quality feedback loop is an interesting activity for teachers and students...

True Grit: The Best Measure of Success and How to Teach It

True Grit: The Best Measure of Success and How to Teach It | Personal and Social Capability | Scoop.it

Can you predict academic success or whether a child will graduate? You can, but not how you might think. When psychologist Angela Duckworth (3)studied people in various challenging situations, including National Spelling Bee participants, rookie teachers in tough neighborhoods, and West Point cadets, she found:

One characteristic emerged as a significant predictor of success. And it wasn't social intelligence. It wasn't good looks, physical health, and it wasn't IQ. It was grit.

Maree Whiteley's insight:

Why is having 'grit', 'determination' and 'perserverance' important? Start a conversation with your students...

Could mindfulness help teachers manage stress?

Could mindfulness help teachers manage stress? | Personal and Social Capability | Scoop.it
Amanda Bailey explains how she teaches mindfulness skills in school to help staff and students manage stress and improve concentration
Maree Whiteley's insight:

A fabulous article that will resonate with most teachers (and students)..."Mindfulness is a skill that has to be practiced regularly and over the long term to realise the most benefit. The more we bring our mind into the present in a formal or informal way then the more we can train the mind to pay attention to all aspects of our life."

Checklist of The 21st Century Learning and Work Skills ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | Personal and Social Capability | Scoop.it
Maree Whiteley's insight:

Skills, attitudes, and attributes come closest to what students need to learn. The learning that can be taken forward has to be grounded in concrete work being done by students which is meaningful in their immediate lives. Some of the skills on the list are less important than others and gain in importance over time. A key consideration is how to make them relevant in students' immediate work. Teaching Empathy: Turning a Lesson Plan into a Life Skill

Teaching Empathy: Turning a Lesson Plan into a Life Skill | Personal and Social Capability | Scoop.it

Worried about the shrinking presence of empathy in our schools? I know how you feel.
With classrooms operating more like grade factories, it's hard to make the case for school-driven empathy. Faced with an endless cycle of memorize, drill, spit back and test, teachers have become the wardens of a new educational reality that pits the head against the heart.

Maree Whiteley's insight:

Empathy is listed as one of the key concepts in AC History but also has a strong presence as a Personal and Social Capability in the Australian Curriculum http://www.australiancurriculum.edu.au/GeneralCapabilities/personal-and-social-capability/Continuum#page=3

What’s Your Learning Disposition? How to Foster Students’ Mindsets | Personal and Social Capability | Scoop.it
Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck’s work on growth mindsets has dominated much of the attention around how students can influence their own learning. But there are other ways to help students tap into their own motivation, too. Here are a few other important mindsets to consider.

Belief in the likelihood of success; Belief that abilities and intelligence can grow with effort...just two of the mindsets explored in this article.
