Finding “A” Level Talent Is Highly Overrated

Finding “A” Level Talent Is Highly Overrated | Performance Project | Scoop.it
I just got back from NBA Summer League in Las Vegas. For those not in the know, it’s a time when rookies and those looking to make a team’s 15-man roster come to play for almost two …
James Schreier's insight:

The flaw in this article is that the author "resets the curve" for grading the NBA players.  You can think this way but it misleads the comparison to the organizational world.  At best, all NBA players are A's and B's -- the college players that didn't make the NBA, the high school stars that didn't make varsity in college -- you get the point.

What separates the good-enough-to-ocassionally-get-paid people from the pros is completely illegible to anyone who's not already a pro.
James Schreier's insight:

It would be so easy to translate the messages here to the workplace for most employees/managers.  So easy because the points are so good and applicable!!!

Frankie Valli and Tommy DeVito: Friends for All Four Seasons

Frankie Valli and Tommy DeVito: Friends for All Four Seasons | Performance Project | Scoop.it
What pushes the limits of men's friendships?

Whether some license was taken in depicting the male bond between Frankie Valli and Tommy DeVito in Jersey Boys (the musical and the Clint Eastwood-directed movie) about the life and times of The Four Seasons singing group may be beside the point.  With any representation of a relationship, the viewer always has to think if he or she would have acted the same way for a friend.  In both the show and the movie.

James Schreier's insight:

I wish the author would have done a little more checking on the various factors of the story -- even though it doesn't change his main point.  But it would provide a better context to that point -- and some broader messages about the topic.

The Five Characteristics of Elite Leadership Teams

The Five Characteristics of Elite Leadership Teams | Performance Project | Scoop.it
I recently worked with a troubled leadership team.
It was still producing solid revenue results, but internal conflicts and damaged trust were inhibiting the team’s ability to align goals and support each other’s efforts.
James Schreier's insight:

I've had the opportunity to observe (not just on TV) race teams in NASCAR -- I've interviewed several drivers.  This article struck me for the perfect way it describes how so many teams (and obviously all team members) practice the points made here.

Team Culture and Positivity: What We Can Learn from Kids’ Basketball

Team Culture and Positivity: What We Can Learn from Kids’ Basketball | Performance Project | Scoop.it

Listening to my son debrief on his tryout gave me a unique opportunity. We spoke one on one about not only this new team which he did join, but we compared notes on all of his other team experiences.  We spoke about what makes a good coach, what makes a good team culture, and the value of praise in driving performance.

And with that context in hand, I took advantage of the discussion to explain some things about what I do for a living and what Globoforce does.  He knew a little about the field I work in, but this was an opportunity for me to connect with him in a whole new way.  I explained, “We help companies impact their culture through the use of praise. That drives higher performance of their employees in a very important and measurable way.”
