Listen to J.R.R. Tolkien Read Poems from The Fellowship of the Ring, in Elvish and English (1952) | performance poetry | Scoop.it
In my book Cate Blanchett can do no wrong, but her performance in the Lord of the Rings movies was particularly spellbinding, especially when she spoke the Elvish language of J.R.R.
Punk Poetry Society's insight:

J.R.R. Tolkien, author of the Lord of the Rings, rocorded his reading poems in Elvish (constructed languages used by Elves). This article presents that recordin with Tolkein's raw voice. You can understand what's he's saying since you have an English translation of the poem. (HI)

Neil Hilborn - "OCD" (Rustbelt 2013)

Neil Hilborn, performing during Individual Finals at the 2013 Rustbelt Regional Poetry Slam. Order his most recent book here: http://buttonpoetry.com/product...
Punk Poetry Society's insight:

A very powerful and emotional performance by Neil Hiborn during the Finals at the 2013 Rustbelt Regional Poetry Slam. Neil has Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, and this poem tells of a woman he fell in love with and then lost, (implied because of his disorder) and how now that she's gone he  wants her back so bad that he "leaves the door unlocked" instead of checking and locking it "18 times" implying that she is the only one who ever made his OCD "go quiet". The epitome of passion and emotion put forth by the poet during performance. (JE)

Punk Poetry Society's insight:

This discusses how a wave of street poets, or "poets for hire" are influencing a new, bustling poetry scene in New Orleans. These "poets for hire" sit on the streetways and write poems on demand for people passing by. The people can give the poet a specific topic. etc. and the poet will ask  them a couple of questions about the subject or the person, and then 15mins. later a poem is produced on the people pay what they think the poem is worth. It focuses on Jordan Soyka, who is one of the street poets but who also runs the New Orleans Poetry Brothel. A very unconventional concept of bringing poets and audiences together in an 'intimate' way. (Get your miind out of the gutter!) What happens is a Poetry Whore (Poet) takes a Patron (listener) into a private area and reads to them an oringinal poem, and then the patron slips the amount of $ they think it was worth. And although there is no actual brothel business going, the atmosphere of it IS steamy and a party, featuring burlesque dancers and acrobats as well as an open bar! They use the entertainment for bait to draw in the people that normally would not enter had it been bluntly outlined that it was a poetry performance area, which has proven to be a good tactic as the Brothel is a big success. 70 people attended the latest ASL Slam event at Pioneers Bar in New York. The slams attract a potpourri of storytellers, rappers, poets, and comedians. (ASL Slam is handmade storytelling.
Punk Poetry Society's insight:

The ASL Slam event is the only monthly performance poetry event of its kind for the deaf community in New York, but it's influence doesn't stop there. This is a powerful story of seeing how poetry can be performed without words and still have such a igniting impact on a community. The event is open to all, and consistently brings in ASL students who are eager to practice signing and their understanding of ASL itself. This event is an artisitc outlet for which those fluent (or just beginning) in ASL and those who are deaf can bond through their admiration for poetry.in a social environment. The experience the narrator has illustrates that even though the room may be quiet, and no voices are heard, this form of performance poetry still impacts its audience in a very big way. (JE)

Punk Poetry Society's insight:

This is a "Thursday Afternoon Treat" presented by BlackBook, in which there are videos featuring famous male actors, etc. from Alan Rickman to Bono from U2 reading famous poems including "Ode to a Nightingale" and "Daffodils". Not every video is a "live" performance, but those that do demonstrate how each person has their own style of reading and projecting the poems, making poetry intimate and personal to them and their audience. It is always interesting to see different people recite the same poem as well, as it would emphasize individual style when it comes to reading or performing poetry. (JE)

Many of us, for example, get most excited about literature when it provokes us to personal introspection or artistic imitation. Why shouldn't those modes of response get some classroom time? Don't we learn from them, too?
Punk Poetry Society's insight:

Lesley Wheeler is a poetry professor who blogs about her experiences as a teacher. This particular entry deals with challenging her students to find a way to creatively perform a poem not listed on her syllabus. She includes examples of what her students produced, which are quite inventful from video responses to theatrical interpretations to dancing, all inspired by poems. This entry not only illustrates how the teacher's minor homework assignment in turn challenged her students creatively, but also  how many outlets one can use to express what they interpret in poetry, whether they read or write it or both. William McGonagall - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

William McGonagall - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

McGonagall moved north and was apprenticed as a handloom weaver in Dundee, following in his father's footsteps. In 1846, he married Jean King; they had five sons and two daughters. Despite the industrial revolution slowly making weavers obsolete, McGonagall appeared to prosper, as there was still need for skilled workers to perform tasks of great complexity.

Punk Poetry Society's insight:

This guy, William McGonagall, is apparently regarded as the worst English poet to have ever lived. He was also a comedic performer, but his wit and humor did not translate to his poetry. It is normally not appropriate to discuss art objectively, but McGonagall is basically the Ed Wood of the spoken word. He is described as humorously bad and was only able to remain as a poet was due to his unflinching ability to beg his friends for money. (DW)

Punk Poetry Society's insight:

Peter Fallon is not strictly a performance poet, but his distinctive style lends itself to the art form of spoken word. He is an Irish poet, but his rhythms are more akin to the 1, 3 downbeat of Jazz or the performance rhythms of the beat poets. He came up through the Dublin scene of the 1970's and has gone on to become a well-known name. (DW)

The National Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Elko launched a competition via YouTube including 17 states mainly centered in the West, inviting people to submit original poetry videos no more than 4mins. in length focusing on rural life. The purpose of the competition is to inspire the next generation to write and perform poetry specifically related to living a rual life. The poems can not just be readings as the rules state; you must perform the poetry that you are submitting. Farewell to Ahmed Fouad Negm, Egypt's 'poet of the people'
The National
Negm shot to fame in the 1970s when his poetry was sung by the blind oud player Sheikh Imam.
Punk Poetry Society's insight:

This guy made some pretty big waves with his poetry and his voice, and enpowered the people of Egypt as a result. This article reflects on the great work of the late Ahmed Fouad Negm, who became famous for his poetry and songs that spoke out against the government, its leader and the overall condition of the marginalised people of Egypt. He was well aware of how much he had influenced others, once stating “I am not a humble person and I am not stupid; I know I am a poet that has affected this nation,”  And so did the government of ?Egypt, as he suffered 18 years in prison due to his public and very negative opinion of the government. An optimism he connected with the strength of having a voice against the government and poetry, despite being "silenced", he gave this message “Poetry is like a horse that freely roams the world despite the prison bars.” He used his words and songs to empower and give hope to the people suffering in Egypt and exemplified the effects that spoken word can have by influencing a nation.

Punk Poetry Society's insight:

Although not directly relating to performance poetry, this list compiled by Paul Gaszak is laughable and entertaining. BAD reasons to start writing poetry, and it's no surprise that financial troubles top the list. Suddenly writing about "Livin' La Vida Broka!"won't help fix such an issue, as will writing poetry in relation to any of the problems you may face that are featured on the list. Nor will it most likely produce good poetry.  Number 8 is particularly intriguing as it mentions elevator conversations and haiku in the same sentence. Here is an example of why this list is valid. Punk Poetry Society's insight:

Like modern art installments AND poetry? And you happen to live in Chicago? Then this  event at Wicker Park is for you! On Friday, December 6th, artists from the Collaboraction Theatre Company will begin to operate a poetry video projection installation onto buildings. From this weekend and every Friday and Saturday until January 3rd, the installation will be active, with 4 continuous hours of poetry and live video displaying on buildings. In addition to the projected poetry and video, there will be a live feed of people on the street and their reactions to the installment. This breaks barriers of traditional performance poetry by calling attention to a much more broader audience as well as push the envelope on ways to express poetry to the public other than one's voice.  The live feed of people on the street showcases how the installment is bringing strangers together as well as increase face-to-face engagement amongst said people, a task that has greatly decreased with the increase of personal media.
